Mass Effect Legendary Edition got its missing multiplayer on November 7, N7 Day, when the ME3Tweaks modding group released a remastered Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mod for the PC version. ME3Tweaks modder Mgamerz told Kotaku the project took three years. It is a fan project: ME3Tweaks’ own site says EA and BioWare have no affiliation with the group.
The Details
Mass Effect 3’s co-op mode was one of two big pieces left out of the 2021 remaster. The other, Mass Effect 1’s Pinnacle Station DLC, is something ME3Tweaks brought back that same year.
Kotaku dates the real start to November 7, 2023, when Mgamerz set up a server for the project, code-named Project Milan, with a message to the group: “Let’s do something stupid. Let’s port multiplayer.” The first prototype ran that December with almost no audio, broken shaders, and a crash at wave three.
The finished mod goes beyond what BioWare shipped in 2012:
- Two new modes. Coalition gives each wave a different enemy group. Unified mixes enemies from all of them.
- A choice of grind. The original’s loot-box progression stays, but you can keep the full grind, start with 10 million credits, or begin with level one of every item.
- New store items. New banners use images from the now-cancelled Mass Effect: Universe.
- Private servers. The mod does not rely on BioWare’s servers, so you can run your own and play with friends.
A store for buying items directly with credits is planned, but Mgamerz says it was not ready for release.
On AI, Mgamerz says the team generated no assets with it, and used a read-only tool only to research the game’s files. In a separate interview, Mgamerz told IGN that low-effort AI mods are making the hobby harder to get into.
What This Means for Players
If you own Legendary Edition on PC, this is the way to play Mass Effect 3’s wave-based co-op inside the remaster. Console owners are left out, because the mod is for the PC version only.
The timing gives the private servers extra weight. EA closed BioWare on October 21, and Kotaku notes the studio’s N7HQ stats site appears to have gone with it. A mod that runs on its own servers could outlast the original game’s official multiplayer if that ever goes dark, though Mgamerz says it is not meant to replace BioWare’s version.

When and Where
The mod went up on Nexus Mods on November 7. You need the PC version of Mass Effect Legendary Edition to use it.
