Monster Hunter Wilds Has a Free Demo Out Now on Switch 2, and Pre-Orders Are Open

Capcom’s free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo is out now on Nintendo Switch 2, and pre-orders for the full game, which launches on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, are open on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom announced both on the evening of October 19, 2026 (Eastern time) in a press release and on its Switch 2 page for Monster Hunter Wilds, which lists a 25% pre-order discount on the standard edition until December 3.

The Details

What the demo covers. It is the real opening of the game, up to the end of Chapter 1-3, “To the Forest.” That includes the full character creator for your Hunter and Palico, plus hunts in the Windward Plains. Capcom’s demo page lists 14 GB of storage needed on Switch 2.

Progress carries over. Demo saves transfer to the full game, even if you stop partway. The catch, per Capcom: the transfer only works if you have no existing save in the full version, and you must use the same user account.

Offline, but local co-op works. The demo has no online play, so SOS Flares call in AI Support Hunters. Up to four Switch 2 owners in the same room can hunt together over local wireless, though the demo and the full game cannot play locally with each other.

Prices. On the US eShop listing, the standard edition is $29.99 instead of $39.99 for pre-orders placed by December 3, with the Guild Knight layered armor set and the Hope Charm talisman as bonuses. The Gold Edition, which adds 126 cosmetic DLC packs, is $79.99. A physical Deluxe Edition on a game-key card sells at retailers for $39.99 with the Deluxe Pack cosmetics.

What This Means for Players

This is the low-risk way in. The demo is the full game’s opening, not a cut-down slice, so testing performance on your own Switch 2 costs nothing and loses no progress. If you like it, pre-ordering before December 3 is $10 cheaper than the eShop price afterward.

Switch 2 players also start with everything added since launch. The port arrives with every Title Update so far, including the Grand Hub, Mizutsune, Lagiacrus, Seregios, the elder dragon Gogmazios and the Final Fantasy XIV collaboration, plus cross-play online with PS5, Xbox and PC (online needs Nintendo Switch Online). Same-room local co-op is unique to this version, which makes it a strong fit for our best Switch 2 co-op games list.

Capcom’s other 2026 Monster Hunter, the turn-based Monster Hunter Stories 3, sits in our best Switch 2 games of 2026. The series is also heading to phones: see Monster Hunter Outlanders’ release date.
