There is no best sword in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, because there is no sword choice at all. Musashi carries a single katana for the entire game. The best sword is your starting sword, fully enhanced, and every other blade you see is a cosmetic skin.
A Deliberate Break From the Series
This is a genuine change rather than an oversight, and reviewers called it out at launch. Previous Onimusha games handed Samanosuke and company a rack of elemental weapons to swap between. Way of the Sword does not.
The replacement for that variety is the Oni Armament system: seven summoned demon weapons used for burst windows alongside your katana. If you are looking for the “which weapon should I use” decision, that is where it lives now, and our Oni Armaments guide covers it.
What Actually Makes Your Sword Stronger
Enhancement, at any Spirit Mirror. The sword track uses Whetstone, Iron, Tempered Iron and Tamahagane, and it raises three things at once:
- Regular Attack Power
- Issen Power
- Oni Armament Power
That third one is the reason the sword is the recommended first enhancement priority. Upgrading your katana also makes every Oni Armament hit harder, so it improves your damage across systems rather than just your basic attacks. Sword Skins Are Purely Cosmetic
They do not change damage or defence. They are a display of how much of the game you have engaged with, and there are twelve.
Six come from rescuing Lion Dogs: Sakurahime at 6, Shishioh at 12, Myogo at 18, Ura-giri at 24, Mooncrossed at 30, and Kikoku for finding all 36. Kikoku is the flex, and it costs a complete Lion Dog hunt.
The other six come from purchase bonuses: Sealed Curse from pre-orders, White Lion from early purchase, and Bamboo and Panda, Whittled Oar, Raizan and Enryu in the Deluxe Kit.
Worth repeating because tier-list sites get it wrong: Raizan and Enryu are skins, not Oni Armaments. Any guide listing them as weapons is not reliable.
