In Persona 4 Golden you get the fishing rod (the River Rod) by returning a lost Fishhook to the old man who stands by the river at Samegawa Flood Plain. The hook comes from a short trading chain: a TaP Soda for the boy at Tatsuhime Shrine, his ladybug for the hostess at Shiroku Pub, and her hook for the old man. Which Version This Covers
This guide is for Persona 4 Golden, the version Atlus currently sells on PC (Steam), PlayStation 4 (playable on PS5 through backward compatibility), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Step by Step: The Fishing Rod Trade Chain
Per the community wiki and player guides, the chain has four trades.
- Buy a TaP Soda. The vending machines in the shopping district’s south side sell it for a small amount of yen.
- Give it to the boy at Tatsuhime Shrine. A boy catching bugs hangs around the shrine during the day. Hand him the TaP Soda and he gives you a Tatsuhime Ladybug in return.
- Visit Shiroku Pub at night. In Golden, the Shiroku Store turns into the Shiroku Pub after dark. Talk to the hostess: she mentions that her pet fish, Akihiko, will not eat. She notices your ladybug and trades you a Fishhook for it.
- Return the hook to the old man. During the day, go to Samegawa Flood Plain and talk to the old man facing the river. He recognizes the hook he lost and gives you the River Rod, which unlocks fishing at the flood plain.
Step 3 needs an evening outing. Golden lets you leave the Dojima house at night when Dojima is not home, and taking an evening part-time job also lets you go out on nights he is. If you are stuck at home, wait for one of his late nights.
How to Get Bait
Having the rod is not enough: Golden fishing needs bait, and the bait decides which fish bite.
- Bread Crumbs: the Shiroku Pub hostess trades Bread Crumbs for bugs. She starts by accepting the Tatsuhime Ladybug and, per the community wiki, asks for higher-ranked bugs as you go.
- Bugs: bugs are also bait on their own. You catch them at Tatsuhime Shrine once you have the Butterfly Net.
To get the Butterfly Net, talk to the boy at the shrine, return to the shrine at night and speak to the woman in white there, then talk to the boy again. How Fishing Works Once You Have the Rod
Fishing at the flood plain takes up the whole afternoon or evening, so treat it like any other time slot. The broad rules, per the community wiki:
- Diligence sets your attempts. A higher Diligence rank gives you more casts per session, up to a maximum of five.
- Weather matters. Bigger fish are more likely to appear on rainy days.
- Read the ripples. One bait can attract two different fish, and the ripples on the water hint which one is biting. Strong white ripples mean one of the big “Guardian” fish.
- Reeling is a timing gauge. After the hook sinks, press the confirm button and hold it while the moving cursor sits on the blue section of a colored gauge. Holding on other colors resets the reel, and holding on red loses the fish.
What Fish Are Good For
Fish restore SP and HP, but in Golden they are also currency. The woman in white at Tatsuhime Shrine trades certain fish for gemstones in the evening, and the Shiroku Pub exchanges those gemstones for items and equipment. You can also feed fish to Akihiko at the pub for more Bread Crumbs.
The Sea Rod and Shichiri Beach (Golden Only)
Golden adds a second fishing spot at Shichiri Beach, which you reach with long scooter rides after getting your license in June. Your River Rod will not work there. Per the community wiki, you earn a rod for sea fishing from the same old man after catching the River Guardian at the flood plain (best tried on a rainy day), and the Shichiri Beach Guardian request ties into that chain. Sources give different names for the sea-fishing gear and different ride counts for unlocking the beach, so follow the old man’s dialogue rather than a fixed number.
How the Original PS2 Persona 4 Differs
The 2008 PS2 release has no trading chain, no Shiroku Pub and no Butterfly Net. Per the community wiki:
- From May 1 onward, you talk to the old man facing the river at Samegawa Flood Plain. Tell him you enjoy fishing and he starts you off with ten pieces of bait and teaches you how to fish.
- Bait comes from cooking meals in the Dojima kitchen, from the housewife outside the Dojima house, and from trading fish back to the old man.
- The reeling minigame is different: you press a button when the float sinks, mash to reel in, and hit quick face-button prompts along the way.
- The river’s Guardian fish needs the Angler’s Set, a reward from one of the old man’s requests.
