Pei is in the Survivors’ Courtyard behind the Temple of Blue Fireflies in Phantom Blade Zero‘s Village of Lu, sitting on a pile of haystacks beside a shed with a small red shrine. He wears purple robes, and the game does not mark him on your map, which is why so many people get stuck looking for him.
You need him for A Puppet’s Wooden Heart, a side tale that starts with the Songstress Puppet at the temple. Below is how to start the tale, exactly where Pei sits, every step after you hand him the letter, and the accessory you earn at the end. The tale has a story twist, so the steps below describe it plainly.
How the Tale Starts
A Puppet’s Wooden Heart begins at the Temple of Blue Fireflies bell in the Village of Lu, the same bell you use for the hidden puppeteer boss our guide to how to beat Dusk covers.
- Find the Songstress Puppet. She is at the temple, singing.
- Wait for her to finish. Let the song end before you speak to her.
- Take her letter. She asks you to deliver it to Pei.
Where Pei Is
From the Temple of Blue Fireflies, head behind the temple into the Survivors’ Courtyard. Look for a shed with a red shrine beside it: Pei sits on the haystacks next to it, dressed in purple robes. Nothing on the map points to him, so the red shrine is the landmark to look for.
Talk to him and hand over the letter. He reads it and runs off, horrified. That is not the end of the tale.
A Puppet’s Wooden Heart, Step by Step
- Deliver the letter to Pei in the Survivors’ Courtyard. He flees.
- Go back to the temple. A Scholarly Puppet is now beside the Songstress Puppet. That puppet is Pei.
- Find Pei’s body. Travel to the Terraces, the fields north of the village, near the Engine Giant Remains bell. A quest marker leads you to his body, slumped beside a campfire.
- Examine the body. You collect the Songstress Puppet’s Letter, a Wulin Tale you can read in your collection.
- Return to the temple one last time. The two puppets have died together, and the tale ends.
Finishing it gives you A Puppet’s Wooden Heart, the accessory the tale is named after.
The Reward: A Puppet’s Wooden Heart
A Puppet’s Wooden Heart is a Support accessory that extends the duration of your summons by 25%. Summoned allies fight for only up to 15 seconds before they vanish, so every extra second matters if you build around them. It pairs naturally with the Puppeteer’s Bell, the summon our guide to the best summon ranks first.
If you do not use summons, it is still worth collecting. Accessories count toward Collector’s Notes, the trophy for collecting 30 of them, which our trophy list covers. Our guide to the best accessories covers which ones deserve your limited slots.
Other Things to Do in the Village of Lu
The Village of Lu is packed with side content, and much of it starts near the temple:
- Firefly’s Memory Flowers. Collecting all six opens the way to Dusk and starts Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, a tale the true ending needs. Our guide to how to get the true ending lists every requirement.
- Jewel. You meet her in the Village of Lu, and she polishes accessories to make them stronger.
- Story bosses. The region ends with Mu Xiaokui, the Young Mistress of the Order, before the story moves on to Pangzhen. Our list of every boss in order shows everything you will fight here.
