Sims 3: How to Fish

Fishing in The Sims 3 is a peaceful and profitable activity that your Sim can enjoy for fun, money, or even completing special recipes and collections. Whether you’re playing a self-sufficient angler or just trying to complete a skill challenge, here’s everything you need to know to start fishing.

How to Start Fishing in The Sims 3

To begin fishing, your Sim needs to head to a location that has a fishing spot. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Find a Fishing Spot
Look for bodies of water that have visible jumping fish or signs labeled “Fishing Spot.” You can find these in public parks, behind some lots, and near ponds or lakes.
  2. Click on the Water
When you’ve found a fishing spot, click on the water and choose “Fish”. Your Sim will walk over and begin casting a line.
  3. No Equipment Needed
Your Sim doesn’t need to buy any fishing gear. Everything they need is automatically provided when they start fishing.

How to Level Up the Fishing Skill in The Sims 3

Fishing is a skill-based activity. To level up faster:

  • Fish often: The more time your Sim spends fishing, the more skill points they’ll earn.
  • Read Fishing Skill Books: These can be found at the bookstore or library and provide skill boosts when read.
  • Take Classes: Your Sim can pay to take a fishing class at the Science Facility for a skill jump.
  • Use Skill Challenges: Once you’ve caught a number of fish, you can track progress in the Skill Journal and work toward rewards like catching fish faster or never having them spoil.

Special Fish and Bait

As your Sim improves their skill, they’ll unlock the ability to catch more types of fish and use bait. For example:

  • Use apples to catch Alley Catfish
  • Use cheese to catch Siamese Catfish
  • Use other fish as bait for higher-tier catches

You can check which bait works with which fish by viewing your Sim’s Fishing Journal.

Selling and Using Fish

  • Sell to the Grocery Store: Catch fish and sell them for Simoleons.
  • Cook Fresh Meals: Use fish in cooking recipes to prepare high-quality meals.
  • Stock Home Aquariums: Use smaller fish to decorate your home or stock ponds on your lot.

With just a rod and a bit of patience, your Sim can become a fishing master, or at least bring home dinner.
