Space Marine 2: Best Heavy Build

The gothic hive city of Avarax under bombardment, the setting of Chaos Siege mode in Space Marine 2

The best Heavy build in Space Marine 2 right now is a sustained-fire Heavy Bolter setup with a Plasma Pistol, built around the Iron Halo for protection and Thermal Boost for steady bonus damage. The Heavy Plasma Incinerator is the equal alternative if your squad needs burst against elites, and the Multi-Melta is the specialist pick for boss-heavy Operations.

Below is the loadout, the perks that matter and why, two weapon variants, and the Prestige Perks to pick. The build is written against Saber Interactive’s Patch 15.0 notes and Hotfix 15.2 (October 20, 2026). Builds are judgment calls: we start from Saber’s official perk and weapon changes and label player consensus as opinion.

How the Heavy Works on the Current Patch

The Heavy in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 carries a heavy weapon and a pistol, with no melee weapon of its own. Its class ability, the Iron Halo, raises a personal energy shield that soaks incoming fire while you shoot.

Saber’s own read on the class, from its Patch 13.0 notes, is the key to building it: the Heavy is a “super strong and effective class” with “lots of build variety, but it comes solely from his weapon loadout. His perks don’t do enough to promote different playstyles.” In other words, pick the gun first, then take the perks that keep you alive and firing.

Patch 15.0 changed little for the class in PvE: the Heavy Bolter gained 5% base damage and the Pyrecannon 10%, while the Iron Halo’s 25% health cut applies to PvP only. A Heavy rework is on the Year 3 roadmap for Patch 17, and game director Dmitry Grigorenko said it “will be mostly about his Iron Halo ability.”

The Loadout

Slot Pick Why
Primary Heavy Bolter Long sustained fire, strong at medium range, buffed in Patch 15.0
Primary alternative Heavy Plasma Incinerator Burst damage against Majoris and Terminus enemies
Sidearm Plasma Pistol Charged shots for elites when the heavy weapon is reloading
Ability Iron Halo Your shield while you hold a firing line

The Heavy Bolter versus Heavy Plasma Incinerator debate has run since launch, and players still split on it. The bolter wins on ammo economy and suits Tyranid swarms, while the plasma wins on burst and suits elite-heavy Chaos missions. Saber’s Patch 9.0 notes also fixed a frustration with the plasma: its charge progress no longer resets when the Heavy enters heavy stance. Our best weapons guide covers every class’s guns.

The Perks That Make the Build

Look for these perks in the Heavy’s tree. The numbers come from Saber’s patch notes, the only official record of each perk’s current values.

Damage perks:

  • Thermal Boost. Reworked in Patch 9.0: “When a Ranged Weapon is 50% Overheated or you have 50% ammo in Magazine, Ranged Damage increases by 15%.” It works with every heavy weapon, so it is the backbone of the build.
  • Coolant Reserve. Patch 13.0 raised its damage bonus from 15% to 50%, which made it one of the strongest numbers in the Heavy’s tree.
  • Wrath of the Imperium. An area damage perk that Patch 6.0 doubled to 100 damage in a 10-metre radius, and that now scales with difficulty.

Iron Halo and survival perks:

  • Power Regulator. Cuts the Iron Halo’s charge drain by 20%, so the shield stays up longer.
  • Encompassing Aegis. Damage reduction raised to 25% in Patch 6.0.
  • Strategic Stand. Patch 6.0 added protection against heavy hits and reduced knockback, which matters when Warriors and Terminus enemies close in.
  • Saving Grace. Since Patch 6.0, reviving an ally also restores your full armour. Saber’s reasoning: “Selflessly saving your allies is a noble act that should be rewarded.”

Melee cover: the Heavy’s one weakness is close combat, and Saber’s Patch 6.0 notes said it wanted perks to “cover Heavy’s almost only weakness.” Overcharge now reads “Melee Damage increases by 30%,” which helps you clear the enemies that get under your gun.

Variant: Plasma Burst

Swap the Heavy Bolter for the Heavy Plasma Incinerator and keep the Plasma Pistol, so both weapons share the same overheat rhythm. Thermal Boost triggers at 50% overheat, which the plasma reaches quickly, and Coolant Reserve’s 50% bonus does the rest. This version deletes Majoris enemies but needs more care with venting, so it pairs best with a squad that handles the swarm.

Variant: Melta Boss Killer

The Multi-Melta became a point-blank weapon in Patch 15.0: Saber’s notes (which list it as the Heavy Melta Rifle, with the same Master-Crafted, Salvation of Bakka and Gathalamor Crusade versions) raised its base damage by 60% while cutting its ammo from 20 to 16, and Hotfix 15.1 moved its falloff start back to 3 metres (6 on the range-focused versions). That makes it brutal against bosses and Terminus enemies you can stand next to, and weak at holding a line. Take it for boss-heavy Operations or the Crucible, with Strategic Stand to stay upright up close.

Prestige Perks to Pick

Prestige Perks unlock as you reset a level 25 Heavy. The effects below come from datamined perk data, as our prestige guide explains:

  • Indomitable Spirit: no stagger or knockback during a Gun Strike.
  • Conviction: 25% less health damage for 10 seconds once your armour is depleted.
  • Honed Precision: 25% lower maximum spread when firing without aiming, ideal for the Heavy Bolter.
  • Exponential Force: melee damage +100%, if you want to fix the melee gap for good.

Six new Heroic weapons arrive in Patch 16, including an Infernus Heavy Bolter with an underbarrel flamethrower, per Focus’s October community update. Our Heroic weapons guide covers the current ones, and every guide is on our Space Marine 2 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weapon for the Heavy in Space Marine 2? The Heavy Bolter for sustained fire and ammo economy, or the Heavy Plasma Incinerator for burst against elites. Players still split between the two.

What is the best sidearm for the Heavy? The Plasma Pistol, the consensus sidearm for most classes, which handles elites while the main weapon reloads.

Is the Heavy getting a rework? Yes. Focus’s Year 3 roadmap schedules it for Patch 17 in the first quarter of 2027, focused on the Iron Halo.

Did Patch 15 nerf the Heavy? Not in PvE. Its Iron Halo lost 25% health in PvP only, and the Heavy Bolter and Pyrecannon gained damage.

Can the Heavy use melee weapons? No. It fights up close with its fists and Gun Strikes, which is why melee damage perks such as Overcharge help.
