To get to Naigtal in World of Warcraft, speak with Riftblade Maella in Silvermoon City to start the questline, then take the portal in Howling Reach, in the Voidstorm, to Naigtal. The catch is timing: Naigtal shares a weekly rotation with the icy world of Val, so the portal only leads there every other week.
This guide covers what Naigtal is, the full route in order, how the weekly rotation works, the Normal and Heroic choice you make at the portal, and the quickest way back once you have been. It covers retail World of Warcraft on the Midnight expansion, where Naigtal arrived with patch 12.0.7 in June 2026 and is still active in patch 12.1, verified against Blizzard’s official announcement and hotfix notes. Naigtal is not part of WoW: Forever at all (more on that below).
What Naigtal is
Naigtal is one of Midnight’s two Showdown zones. Blizzard’s official Val and Naigtal announcement describes it as “a mysterious mushroom-filled world” where “the Hal’hadar ethereals have established a Mana-Forge base.” You join the Illidari and the Army of the Light to “venture into the mana-rich bogs of Naigtal and put an end to their insidious operation.”
It is an off-world zone, not a place on the Azeroth map, so you reach it only through the portal. Veteran players may recognize the name: per the community wiki, Naigtal first appeared in Legion as one of the Burning Legion’s Invasion Points reached from Argus. The Midnight zone is the one current content points to.
How to unlock and reach Naigtal, step by step
- Own Midnight and be ready for its endgame. Naigtal is Midnight content, so it needs the expansion on top of your subscription; our World of Warcraft cost guide breaks down both. Blizzard’s announcement does not list a level requirement, but per the community wiki the zone is flagged for levels 80 to 90, and it hands out Champion and Heroic gear, so it is aimed at characters at or near the level cap.
- Go to Silvermoon City and find Riftblade Maella. Talk to her to begin the new questline.
- Travel to the Voidstorm and head to Howling Reach, where the portal stands. If you still need flying or a faster mount for the trip, our guide on how to ride a mount covers Skyriding and Steady Flight.
- Click the portal. If Naigtal is the active world that week, it sends you there. The first time, it asks you to pick Normal or Heroic difficulty (see below).
- Follow the questline at the Umbral Base Camp, the hub on Naigtal. Early in the chain you earn a recall toy that makes every later trip much faster.
The weekly rotation: why the portal may send you to Val
Blizzard is clear on this: “Each area rotates weekly, becoming available for one week at a time.” Only one of Naigtal and Val is open in any given week. If you step through the Howling Reach portal and land in a frozen wasteland, that is Val, and Naigtal will be the active zone the following week, after the weekly reset.
This matters for anything specific to Naigtal, such as its world boss. If you are hunting Naigtal’s rewards, check which zone is live before you plan your week, and use the Val week for Val’s equivalent activities.
Normal or Heroic: the choice at the portal
Per Blizzard, “when first selecting the portal to travel to the destination, you’ll choose to face the challenges within either Normal or Heroic difficulty, providing increased rewards in Heroic.” The differences Blizzard lists:
- Rares: a chance at Champion 1/6 gear on Normal, Champion 4/6 on Heroic, for your warband.
- World boss: Nexus-Captain Leth’ir, the world boss of Naigtal, awards a Champion item on Normal and a Heroic item on Heroic.
- Field Accolades: the currency you earn from world quests, events, rares and treasures is increased on Heroic.
Blizzard’s hotfix notes refer to this as the Heroic World Tier, and a later hotfix restored the option to talk to a spirit healer to leave it and resurrect, so you are not locked in if Heroic proves too much. Completing the “Showdown on Naigtal” quest rewards a Riftstalker’s Cache, and like Delves, the zone feeds the World row of your Great Vault.
Getting back to Naigtal quickly
You do not need to repeat the Silvermoon-to-Voidstorm trip every time. Blizzard says the questline gives you the Lightveil Recall Beacon, a toy that “recalls you back to the Umbral Base Camp on Val or Naigtal” on a 15-minute cooldown. Note the wording: it takes you to whichever camp is currently active, so during a Val week it sends you to Val, not Naigtal.
The camp’s vendor, Fieldsmith Ventem, sells transmog and Housing decor for Field Accolades and Voidlight Marl. If you want a gathering side activity for the downtime between world quests, our World of Warcraft fishing guide covers how to get started.
Naigtal and WoW: Forever
Naigtal is not in WoW: Forever. Blizzard’s classic-style version launching November 4, 2026, is set in a reimagined version of the original Azeroth, and Naigtal is a Midnight-era off-world zone. If you are planning a Forever character instead, start with our guide to which WoW: Forever ruleset to choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Naigtal portal? In Howling Reach, in the Voidstorm. You must start the questline with Riftblade Maella in Silvermoon City first.
Why did the portal take me to Val instead? Naigtal and Val rotate weekly, with only one open at a time. Wait for the next weekly reset and the portal will lead to Naigtal.
Do I need Midnight to go to Naigtal? Yes. It is Midnight content added in patch 12.0.7, so you need the expansion and an active subscription or Game Time.
Can I change between Normal and Heroic? You choose at the portal on your first visit. Hotfix notes confirm players in Heroic World Tier can talk to a spirit healer to exit it.
Who is the Naigtal world boss? Nexus-Captain Leth’ir, per Blizzard. He drops a Champion item on Normal and a Heroic item on Heroic.
