WoW Forever: Where to Turn In Books

Kirin Tor mages and two arcane constructs guard a glowing portal at the top of a stone stairway in Dalaran in World of Warcraft: Forever

In World of Warcraft: Forever, library books go to one librarian per faction. Alliance players turn them in to Garion Wendell at the top of the tower inside the Wizard’s Sanctum, in Stormwind City’s Mage Quarter, and Horde players turn them in to Owen Thadd in the Magic Quarter of Undercity.

Hand each book in as soon as you find it. Every book counts toward the library’s reward quests, which unlock at 10, 20 and 25 books and offer a necklace, a ring and finally a weapon or off-hand item. Mages who played Season of Discovery will recognize the system, but in Forever every class can collect the books and claim the rewards. Below are the librarians, the reward tiers, the easiest early books, and the Elwynn Forest quest people confuse with them. Everything is checked against Blizzard’s WoW Forever development notes, which name the Greater Friend of the Library quest and its rewards, as of November 6.

Where to Turn In Library Books

Faction Librarian Where to find them
Alliance Garion Wendell Top of the tower inside the Wizard’s Sanctum, Mage Quarter, Stormwind City
Horde Owen Thadd Magic Quarter, Undercity

Only these two librarians take books, so every book makes the trip to Stormwind or Undercity, whichever city belongs to your faction.

  1. Loot the book. Books sit on tables, shelves and in ruins across the world. Click one to pick it up.
  2. Travel to your librarian. Horde characters in Kalimdor take the zeppelin from the towers outside Orgrimmar’s main gate to Tirisfal Glades, then ride to Undercity. Alliance characters in Ironforge can take the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind.
  3. Talk to the librarian with the book in your bags and hand it in. Each book is a separate turn-in, so there is no need to hoard them.
  4. Claim the milestone quests when you reach 10, 20 and 25 books.

You can only use your own faction’s librarian, since the other faction’s capital is hostile to you.

Library Book Rewards

Books turned in Quest Choose one
10 Friend of the Library Scholarly Pendant or Erudite’s Amulet
20 Greater Friend of the Library Field Researcher’s Loop or Philanthropist’s Ring
25 Greater Friend of the Library Truthseeker’s Bow, Crest of Elucidation or Researcher’s Night Light

Three details matter when you plan:

  • Books count toward every tier. The 10 books for the first reward also count toward the 20 and the 25, so 25 different books earn all three rewards.
  • The later quests have level requirements. The 20-book quest asks for character level 20 and the 25-book quest for level 30.
  • The final rewards need level 40 to wear. Blizzard’s development notes from the beta say the Truthseeker’s Bow “now has the correct level requirement of level 40,” matching the other two rewards from the quest, which already had a level 40 requirement.

How Many Books There Are

There are about 40 different library books spread across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, from starting zones to the Plaguelands, and you only need 25 of them for every reward. That leaves plenty of room to skip the awkward ones:

  • Opposite-faction ground. Some books sit in towns and zones the other faction controls. On a PvP ruleset they are the first ones to skip.
  • Dungeon doorsteps. A few books lie right beside dungeon entrances, such as Magma or Lava? near Blackrock Depths and Necromancy 101 at Caer Darrow, home of Scholomance. You want the book, not the instance, so do not step through the portal.
  • One book, two spots. Rumi of Gnomeregan: The Collected Works appears in both Westfall and Loch Modan, but it only counts once.

Easy Early Books

These are close to the starting zones and capitals, so they come naturally while you level. Spots are as of launch week.

Book Zone Where
Archmage Theocritus’s Research Journal Elwynn Forest Upper floor of the Tower of Azora
Archmage Antonidas: The Unabridged Autobiography Ironforge Hall of Explorers
Rumi of Gnomeregan: The Collected Works Westfall or Loch Modan The Sentinel Hill inn, or upstairs in the Thelsamar inn (one copy counts)
Bewitchments and Glamours Westfall A house in Moonbrook
The Lessons of Ta’zo Orgrimmar An inscribed stone by the Mage trainers in the Valley of Spirits
The Apothecary’s Metaphysical Primer Tirisfal Glades A shelf in Brill’s alchemy shop
The Dalaran Digest, Vol. 23 Silverpine Forest A bookshelf in Ambermill’s main hall
Baxtan: On Destructive Magics The Barrens A table in Ratchet’s engineering building, near the flight master

Ambermill is packed with enemies in their high teens, so bring a friend or a few levels. For the rest of the list, book-tracking addons for WoW Forever are on CurseForge, and our guide to installing addons shows how to add one. Horde players coming from Mulgore can use our guide to getting from Orgrimmar to Thunder Bluff in reverse to reach the zeppelins.

Not the Library: The Book Return Quest

If you searched for where to turn in books while questing in Elwynn Forest, you may be on Book Return, a regular zone quest and not a library book. Blizzard’s development notes mention it: completing Book Return “now properly removes the extra Book Bag from the player’s inventory.” Quests like this go back to the character who gave them, not to a librarian. Blizzard’s new player’s starter guide explains how to find the turn-in: press L to open your quest log, select the quest, and look for the marker on your map; a question mark above a character means “a completed quest is ready to turn in.”

Why Bother With the Books

The rewards are easy jewelry for a character that is still leveling, and the 25-book choice gives every role something. Books also take you into corners of the world you might otherwise skip, which suits the Legacy challenge for exploring the whole map; our Legacy Points guide lists it. Pick up flight paths as you go, since a librarian trip from the far side of a continent is long, and the Frequent Flier Legacy perk makes flights cheaper and faster.
