Blizzard announced on September 21, 2026 that World of Warcraft: Forever will have no realm selection: players instead pick one of four rulesets (Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore), and every character gets a first name plus a surname that only has to be unique across your region. The details come from two official posts on Blizzard News published the same day.
Updated October 22, 2026: Blizzard has since added a fifth ruleset, Roleplay-PvP, which arrives with the November 4 launch. Blizzard plans to make it available when Early Name Reservation opens on October 27. Our news story on Roleplay-PvP has the details.
The Details
Rulesets replace realms. Per Blizzard, the four options are:
- Normal: the baseline experience, with PvP only when you opt in.
- PvP: more open-world danger in contested territory, and one faction per account.
- Roleplaying: for players who want to lean into the fantasy alongside like-minded players.
- Hardcore: death has lasting consequences. It arrives sometime after launch, with no date given.
You can only group, run dungeons and raid with players on the same ruleset, though battlegrounds mix every ruleset except Hardcore. There is no free switching: moving means a new character, with one exception, a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset. Collections and Legacy Points are shared across rulesets.
Two-part names. In the second post, Blizzard explains that each character has a first and second name, and only the full combination must be unique in your region. Blizzard’s own example is a family: Asha, Thalen and Mira Brightvale. You can hide your surname on nameplates under Options, Nameplates, “My Secondary Name,” though it still shows in chat.
Early Name Reservation runs October 27 through November 3, 2026 for eligible upgrade purchases, first come, first served, with no guarantee of a given name.
What This Means for Players
The name change is a bigger deal than it looks. On realm-based servers, the most popular names went fast at every launch; with surnames and region-wide uniqueness, the first name you want is far more likely to be available, and the family-surname idea makes naming a guild or friend group genuinely easy. Decide your ruleset before reservation opens, since changing later means rerolling.
For PvP players, the one-faction-per-account rule is the real constraint: pick your side for the PvP ruleset carefully. Everyone else can play both factions.
The beta is still running through October 21 ahead of the November 4 launch; our guide to the beta’s length has the phases, and our beta news covers the GPU cutoff worth checking before you pre-purchase. If you are between Blizzard games in the meantime, Diablo 4’s Season of Hell’s Legacy is live now.
