Marvel Rivals: Best Heroes for Beginners

If you are starting Marvel Rivals now, the heroes worth learning first are the ones whose kits stay useful even when your aim is not. Before the list, one warning: the most commonly recommended beginner hero in older guides was reworked in Season 10, and most of that advice is now stale.

Read This Before You Follow an Older Guide

Scarlet Witch was fully reworked in Season 10, which launched September 11, 2026. Her kit now revolves around applying and consuming Chaos Marks: a new Scarlet Hex ability applies the marks, a passive converts a quarter of the damage dealt to marked enemies into self-healing, Chaos Control hits all marked targets in a cone, Dark Seal now stuns only on the initial detonation, and Reality Erasure gained continuous damage scaling during its wind-up. A follow-up patch on September 17 further reduced her damage immunity window during Reality Erasure.

She was the go-to beginner recommendation almost everywhere, on the strength of an auto-locking primary fire. Nearly every article recommending her for that reason predates this rework. If a guide tells you she is the easy pick because you do not have to aim, that guide is out of date.

Two other Season 10 changes shape the early experience. Every Strategist got a global nerf to how quickly healing and damage convert into Ultimate energy, so supports build ults more slowly than they used to. And Black Cat lost the invincibility on Phantom Pursuit, which is now damage reduction with Unstoppable instead.

Vanguard

Doctor Strange is the most forgiving tank in the game and was buffed in Season 10. A large health pool, a shield that protects the team rather than just himself, and portal utility that rewards map knowledge over reflexes.

Groot has outsized impact for how little precision he demands. Wall placement cuts sightlines and splits enemy teams, and a well-placed wall wins fights without you hitting a single shot.

Captain America is durable and mobile, and forgiving of positioning mistakes that would kill a squishier hero.

The Thing is extremely tough and melee-focused, though he was nerfed in Season 10, as was Magneto.

Duelist

The Punisher plays like a conventional shooter, which makes him the easiest entry point for anyone arriving from another FPS. His kit is an all-rounder rather than a gimmick.

Squirrel Girl fires splash projectiles, so near-misses still do work. That forgiveness is exactly what a new player needs while learning to track targets.

Wolverine was buffed in Season 10 with higher base claw damage and better Rage scaling, and suits players who would rather commit to melee than duel at range.

Hela is strong for players already comfortable with precise aim, though she is less forgiving than the others here.

Strategist

Cloak and Dagger is the standout beginner support: Dagger’s healing daggers lock onto allies, so you can keep a team alive without aiming at all, and the Cloak side gives you an offensive option when healing is not the priority.

Rocket Raccoon similarly heals without demanding aim and brings revive utility, which is enormous value from a hero you can play badly and still contribute with.

Jeff the Land Shark has a simple kit and an Ultimate capable of deciding a round outright, and he was buffed in Season 10.

Mantis and Luna Snow are both widely recommended, with a little more mechanical demand than the three above.

How to Treat Tier Advice

There is no official beginner tier list, and everything above is opinion drawn from community consensus rather than something NetEase publishes. Win-rate percentages quoted by tier-list sites are skewed by pick rate and by which ranks the data came from.

The more durable advice: pick one hero from a role your team actually needs, and stay on them long enough to learn the matchups. Our Lord rank guide covers how that focus pays out in progression, and our Team-Ups guide explains the pairing system that now benefits every hero regardless of composition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Scarlet Witch still a good beginner pick?

She was reworked in Season 10 around a Chaos Marks mechanic, so advice based on her old auto-locking primary fire no longer applies. Try her before assuming she plays the way older guides describe.

Which role is easiest to start with?

Strategist heroes like Cloak and Dagger or Rocket Raccoon ask the least of your aim while still contributing heavily.

Which Duelist is best for FPS players?

The Punisher, whose kit most closely resembles a conventional shooter.

Do supports feel weaker this season?

Slightly. Season 10 reduced how quickly healing and damage convert into Ultimate energy for every Strategist.
