The Battle Pass in Marvel Rivals runs on Chrono Tokens, not match XP, and Chrono Tokens come overwhelmingly from daily and weekly missions. That single fact explains why playing ten matches in a row barely moves the bar while a short session that clears missions moves it a lot.
Two Systems, Not One
It helps to separate what is actually progressing:
- Account Level rises from playing and gates a few things, including Competitive, which unlocks at level 15.
- Hero Proficiency is per hero and drives the Lord track, covered in our Lord rank guide.
- The Battle Pass runs on Chrono Tokens from missions.
These do not feed each other. Time spent chasing one is not automatically progress on another, which is the root of most “why am I not levelling” confusion.
Chrono Tokens Come From Missions
Prioritise daily and weekly missions over raw match count. A session built around clearing missions will out-earn a longer session of unfocused play, because the tokens are attached to the objectives rather than to time in match.
The best news here is that Battle Passes do not expire. A pass you have bought keeps progressing after its season ends, so there is no need to panic-grind before a rollover. NetEase has also brought older passes back as purchasable on occasion, with Season 4’s pass returning for a window during Season 10.
The current pass is The Godbomb, running with Season 10, which launched September 11, 2026 and carries ten new costume sets.
Mode Choice Genuinely Matters for Proficiency
For hero proficiency specifically, there is a verified difference between modes. Proficiency missions in Quick Match and Competitive have no daily repeat cap, while proficiency missions in Conquest and Doom Match do carry a daily repeat limit.
If you are grinding a hero’s proficiency, Quick Match is the more reliable venue, and it gets you into the action faster than Competitive.
What About Practice vs AI?
This one is genuinely contested, so treat it carefully. Player reports indicate that Practice vs AI and Custom Games award a small amount of account XP only, with no hero progression and no Battle Pass challenge credit. Other sources claim reduced but otherwise normal progression.
NetEase has never published XP figures for any mode, so every number circulating online is unsourced. The sensible position: use vs AI to learn a hero’s kit safely, but do not build a progression plan around it.
Be similarly sceptical of specific figures you will see quoted for tokens per daily mission, XP per win, or the account level cap. Those numbers come from aggregator and boosting sites with no official backing.
The Practical Routine
Log in, check the daily and weekly mission list first, and pick heroes and modes that overlap with what those missions ask for. Clear them, and if you still have time, keep playing the hero whose proficiency you care about in Quick Match. That sequence earns on all three tracks at once rather than one at a time.
