Marvel Rivals: How to Avoid Matchmaking Penalties

NetEase announced stricter penalties for inactivity, throwing, and leaving matches early in Marvel Rivals on September 17, 2026. Suspensions now escalate for repeat offenders, and Quick Match no longer shares a penalty escalation tier with Arcade Mode, which means casual leaving has its own track rather than being diluted by another mode.

What Is Being Penalised

Three behaviours are named in the announcement:

  • Leaving matches early, which is the one most players encounter.
  • Inactivity, meaning going idle rather than disconnecting outright. Standing still in spawn is not a loophole.
  • Throwing, meaning deliberately playing to lose.

Penalties take the form of matchmaking suspensions, and they escalate. A first instance is not treated the same as a pattern, so the cost of a genuine disconnect is much lower than the cost of habitually abandoning games.

The Quick Match Change

Previously Quick Match and Arcade Mode shared a penalty escalation tier, which meant offences in one carried over into the other’s tracking. They have been separated.

The practical effect is that Quick Match now tracks its own escalation. If you treat Quick Match as a place where leaving does not matter, that behaviour now accumulates on its own record rather than being spread across two modes.

Why Competitive Is Stricter

Leaving a Competitive match hurts five other people and distorts a ranked ladder, so it has always carried heavier consequences than casual play. If you are unsure whether you have time for a full game, Quick Match is the safer choice, and it is also the better venue for hero proficiency, as our Battle Pass progression guide explains.

Ranked party size rules matter here too. Bronze through Grandmaster allows any party size except exactly five, and Celestial upward is solo or duo only, which our crossplay and ranked guide covers in full.

Practical Advice

Finish the match. If your team is losing badly, the time cost of playing it out is almost always smaller than the time cost of a matchmaking suspension, and a suspension applies to the games you actually wanted to play afterwards.

If you disconnect for genuine technical reasons, reconnect rather than starting a new queue. Rejoining an in-progress match is the behaviour the system is designed to reward, and it limits the damage to your team.

If you know you are short on time, play Practice vs AI or a Custom Game instead. Neither carries the same obligation to five teammates, though as our progression guide notes, vs AI is not a meaningful progression farm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be banned for leaving matches in Marvel Rivals?

Penalties take the form of escalating matchmaking suspensions rather than account bans, and repeat offenders face longer ones.

Does going idle count as leaving?

Inactivity is explicitly named alongside leaving and throwing, so going idle is penalised rather than being a way around the rules.

Does leaving Quick Match matter?

Yes, and more than before. Quick Match no longer shares a penalty escalation tier with Arcade Mode, so it tracks its own record.

What happens if I disconnect accidentally?

Reconnect to the match if you can. Penalties escalate with repeat behaviour, so an isolated disconnect is treated far more leniently than a pattern.
