There is no battling in Pokemon Pokopia. No trainer battles, no wild encounters, no Gyms, no badges, no type effectiveness, and no player-versus-player. It is a building and life sim wearing a Pokemon coat, and once that lands, the rest of the game makes far more sense.
So What Are the Moves For?
You play as a Ditto, and Ditto learns around fourteen moves from the Pokemon you befriend: Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, Dig, Surf, Water Gun, Razor Leaf, Magnet Rise, Dive and others.
None of them are attacks. Every one is a traversal or terrain tool:
- Cut clears trees and tall grass, producing Small Logs for lumber
- Rock Smash breaks rock and clay blocks, which is how you get Squishy Clay for bricks
- Water Gun revives dry plants and raises humidity
- Dig, Surf, Strength and Dive open up terrain and routes
A move you would use to knock out a Rattata in any other Pokemon game is, here, a landscaping implement.
How You “Catch Them All”
By building. You do not throw Poke Balls. You study a species’ Pokedex entry for its preferred habitat and likes, build a place matching those conditions, and the Pokemon chooses to move in.
That makes the Pokedex a planning document rather than a trophy cabinet, and it makes habitat design the core loop of the entire game. Our humidity guide covers one of the conditions you are tuning, and our best Pokemon guide covers which residents actually earn their keep afterwards.
Is That a Problem?
It clearly was not for most players. Pokopia holds an 89 on Metacritic, a 98 percent recommend rate on OpenCritic, and a 39 out of 40 from Famitsu, making it the highest-rated Pokemon game on Metacritic, and it passed five million units by August 2026.
The absence of combat is the point rather than an omission. Removing battling is what lets the game be about coexistence: you are rebuilding a ruined world into somewhere Pokemon want to live, and fighting them would undercut that completely.
If you want battles, this is not the game, and no update or DLC has added them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any combat in Pokemon Pokopia?
None at all. No trainer battles, wild battles, Gyms, badges or PvP.
What do Ditto’s moves do if there is no fighting?
They are traversal and terrain-clearing tools used for building, gathering and exploring.
How do you collect Pokemon without catching them?
You build habitats that match a species’ preferences, and they move in on their own.
Has DLC added battling?
No. The Expansion Pass adds areas, items and Pokemon, not combat.
