Saving in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask depends entirely on which version you are playing, and the difference is big enough to lose progress over.
On N64, the only true save is playing the Song of Time to reset to the first day. On 3DS, that is reversed: owl statues are the real save and the Song of Time no longer saves at all.
On N64 (Including Switch Online)
This is the version most people are playing now, through Nintendo Switch Online.
Playing the Song of Time is the permanent save. It resets the three-day cycle back to the first day and writes your progress properly. Everything you keep across cycles, masks, songs, key items, is preserved.
Owl statues are save and quit only. You can save at one, but that save exists to let you stop playing. Load it and it is consumed, so it is a bookmark rather than a save file. Treat it as “I am putting the game down now”, not “I am safe here.”
That is the single most misunderstood mechanic in the game. Players save at an owl, close the game, come back, keep playing, die, and discover the owl save is gone.
On 3DS
Majora’s Mask 3D changed this deliberately.
Owl statues save and continue. They became a normal save point, so you can save at one and carry on playing, and the file is still there later.
The Song of Time no longer saves. It still resets the cycle, but the saving job moved to the statues.
You interact with statues by checking them, not by hitting them with your sword as on N64. If you are switching between versions and a statue is not responding, that is why.
The 3DS version also has three save files rather than two.
Which Method to Use
On N64 or Switch Online: play the Song of Time whenever you have made real progress. Use owl statues only when you are about to stop playing.
On 3DS: use owl statues freely. They are the safety net the N64 version never had.
Tips Most Players Miss
- On N64, never treat an owl save as a checkpoint. It disappears when used.
- Reset the cycle more often than feels natural. The three days are meant to be repeated, and the Song of Time is both your save and your reset.
- Check which version you are on before planning a long session. The two save systems reward completely different habits.
The three-day cycle is the spine of the whole game and saving is tangled into it by design. Our full Zelda guides cover the rest of the series, including how long Ocarina of Time takes if you are working through the N64 pair.
