The two exchanges in GTA 5 work differently, and that difference decides what is worth buying. LCN responds to what happens in your own game. BAWSAQ is influenced by wider player activity across the game’s online connection. Buying blind on the wrong one is why a lot of investments sit flat no matter how long you hold them.
LCN: Your Game, Your Market
LCN reacts to your single-player world. That makes it predictable, because you are the thing moving it.
The clearest use of that is damaging a company on purpose and buying its competitor. Attack one chain’s outlets and its share price falls while its rival rises. It is slow, it is manual, and it works.
The far larger use is Lester’s assassination missions, which move specific stocks in known directions. Our guide on how to beat the stock market covers the full sequence and the pairings, and it is the single highest-return activity in the game.
BAWSAQ: Not Under Your Control
BAWSAQ moves based on aggregate activity beyond your own save, which means you cannot reliably manipulate it the way you can LCN.
It also depends on the game’s online services being reachable. If BAWSAQ will not load for you, that is usually connectivity rather than a bug, and it is a known frustration on older platforms.
Practically: treat BAWSAQ as a market you observe, and LCN as a market you act on. The exception is the assassination missions, two of which target BAWSAQ stocks specifically.
The Rule That Matters More Than Any Pick
Timing beats stock selection. A modest percentage return on heist money is worth vastly more than a large percentage return on early-game pocket change.
That is why the standard advice is to leave the optional assassinations until after The Big Score. Our guide on how to do a heist covers getting there.
And invest with all three characters every time. They hold separate portfolios, and using only one leaves roughly two thirds of the return on the table.
Buying Without the Assassinations
If you want to invest outside the mission-driven picks, the honest answer is that returns are small and slow. LCN drifts, and without an event to move a price you are waiting on noise.
Money is generally better spent on property at that point. Our guide on the best business to buy covers what actually pays back, and buying property covers the mechanics.
A Note on the Numbers
Specific return percentages and stock tables circulate widely on community sites and come from player testing rather than Rockstar. They are broadly reliable on direction and much less so on exact figures.
