The Hylian Shield in Breath of the Wild is in the Lockup beneath Hyrule Castle, in a chest guarded by a Stalnox. Two details decide whether the trip works: the Stalnox only exists between roughly 9pm and 5am, and the shield drops exactly once. Break it afterwards and you are buying a replacement rather than coming back for another.
Go at Night
Stalnoxes are skeletal, and during the day they are a pile of bones on the floor that will not animate. Arrive in daylight and the room looks empty and inert, which convinces a lot of players they are in the wrong place.
Turn up between 9pm and 5am and the bones assemble. If you have arrived early, our guide on how to start a fire covers sitting at a campfire to pass time to night.
Getting Into the Lockup
The Lockup is part of the castle’s underground. Hyrule Castle is dangerous at any point in the game, and the approach matters more than the fight:
- Come in from the water and the lower levels rather than fighting down through the castle.
- Paragliding in from a high point nearby skips most of the defences.
- Guardians patrol the castle grounds, and avoiding them is far cheaper than fighting them.
You do not need to have freed any Divine Beast or done any story work first. This is available early if you are willing to take the risk.
Fighting the Stalnox
Standard Stalnox rules. Target the eye, which is the weak point. Hitting it brings the creature down, and once it is on the ground you attack the eye directly.
A trick worth knowing: when the eye is knocked loose you can pick it up and throw it, and the body collapses looking for it. Our guide on Flurry Rush covers the dodge timing that makes the fight considerably safer.
Once Only
This is the important difference from the sequel. In Breath of the Wild the Stalnox respawns on a Blood Moon, but it does not drop the Hylian Shield again.
If your shield breaks or is lost, the replacement comes from Granté in Tarrey Town, who sells copies of gear you have already owned, for rupees. That makes the shield expensive rather than irreplaceable, and it is the reason a lot of players never use it.
Our view: use it. A shield in your inventory is worth nothing, and Granté exists precisely so that breaking it is not permanent. That is the same argument our guide on how to repair weapons makes about gear generally: this game wants you to spend what you find.
