Zelda Ocarina of Time: What to Do After the Forest Temple

Link drawing the Master Sword

After the Forest Temple in Ocarina of Time, your next destination is the Fire Temple, inside Death Mountain Crater. The complication is that you cannot survive the crater without the Goron Tunic, and getting it means dealing with what has happened to Goron City in the seven years you were gone.

Head for Death Mountain

Go to Kakariko Village and up Death Mountain Trail. Goron City is on the way, and it is not the place you remember: the Gorons have been captured, and only one is left.

That Goron is Link, named after you by Darunia. Helping him is the route to everything else here.

The Goron Tunic

The tunic makes you fireproof, and without it Death Mountain Crater deals continuous damage that no amount of hearts will outlast.

You can buy one from the Goron shop, but the reliable route is the one the story hands you. Either way, get it before entering the crater, not after.

Our guide on how to get to Death Mountain covers the climb, which you will already know from the child half of the game.

The Megaton Hammer

The Fire Temple gives you the Megaton Hammer, and it opens more than it first appears. Several rusted switches and cracked rocks across Hyrule only respond to it.

Most usefully, it gets you into the Great Fairy fountain in Death Mountain Crater, which doubles your magic meter. Our guide on all Great Fairy locations covers that one and the five others.

Then the Water Temple

After Fire comes Water, at Lake Hylia, and it is the dungeon with the reputation. Our guide on how to beat the Water Temple covers the water-level system that causes most of the trouble, and the best order to do the temples covers the full sequence.

Two Things Worth Doing Now

Start the Biggoron’s Sword trade. It has timed legs and takes real time, and starting it late means finishing it after it could have helped. Our guide on the Biggoron Sword covers the twelve steps.

Collect bottles if you are short. Bottled fairies revive you automatically, and the back half of this game is where that starts mattering. Our guide on all bottle locations covers the four.

Do Not Skip the Bow Upgrades

You have the Fairy Bow now. The shooting gallery raises your quiver capacity, and the special arrow types arrive across the next few dungeons. Our guide on where to get the bow covers the upgrades and where each arrow type comes from.
