Zelda Breath of the Wild: How to Get the Champion’s Tunic

Scene from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Champion’s Tunic in Breath of the Wild comes from Impa in Kakariko Village, and she gives it to you once you have recovered one captured memory. Not all twelve. That is the detail worth knowing, because most players assume the full set is required and put the whole thing off.

The Three Steps

1. Get the camera back. Speak to Impa in Kakariko Village to start the Locked Mementos quest, then go to Hateno Village and find Purah at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. Once the forge is lit, Purah unlocks the Camera rune and the Sheikah Sensor on your slate.

2. Recover one memory. Restoring the camera also restores the twelve memory photographs. Go to the location shown in any one of them, find the golden circle on the ground, stand in it and press A to trigger the cutscene.

3. Go back to Impa. Show her you have recovered a memory and she hands over the Champion’s Tunic.

Why It Is Worth Having

The tunic’s unique property is that it displays enemy health bars. No other armour in the game does this, and once you have played with it you will not want to go back.

Knowing exactly how much damage an enemy has left changes how you fight. It tells you whether one more hit finishes a Lynel or whether you need to disengage, which is the difference between a clean kill and a dead Link. Our guide on how to beat Lynels covers the fight where that information matters most.

Upgrading It

The Champion’s Tunic can be upgraded at Great Fairy fountains, and it upgrades on its own rather than as part of a set, so there is no matching gear you need to hunt down.

Upgrading costs rupees alongside materials, and the later tiers are expensive. Our guide on how to farm rupees covers funding it.

It Has No Set Bonus

Worth being clear, because it changes how you use it: there is no Champion’s set. The tunic is a chest piece you pair with whatever legs and head you need for the situation, which is actually convenient. You can wear it with climbing gear or cold-weather trousers without losing anything.

That said, it means it will not give you an environmental bonus. For the cold you still want the proper gear, and our guide on the Warm Doublet covers the earliest option.

The Other Eleven Memories

You do not need them for the tunic, but recovering all twelve does change the ending, and they are scattered across Hyrule as a natural reason to explore.

Doing them is a separate project from getting the armour, which is the point of this guide: get the tunic early, do the memories whenever.
