Zelda Ocarina of Time: What to Do in Kakariko Village

Link fighting a Stalfos

Kakariko Village in Ocarina of Time is the most densely packed location in the game. It holds a dungeon entrance, the Gold Skulltula hub, a bottle, a song, the graveyard, and the start of the longest side quest in the game. Most playthroughs pass through it three or four times without picking up half of it.

Catch the seven Cuccos. The Cucco Lady near the graveyard path has lost her birds, and returning all seven earns an empty bottle. They are on rooftops and in awkward corners, so expect a couple of laps. Our guide on all bottle locations covers the other three.

Get the Sun’s Song. It is in the graveyard, in a grave you pull open. This is the single most missable song in the game, and it stuns ReDeads and flips day to night. Our guide on all ocarina songs covers the rest.

Play the Dampé grave race. The gravekeeper’s race earns you the Hookshot, which is required for the Forest Temple. This is not optional.

Visit the windmill for the Song of Storms, from Guru-Guru.

The House of Skulltula

This is the hub for the game’s 100 Gold Skulltula tokens, and the rewards start early enough to matter: the Adult’s Wallet at 10 tokens and the Giant’s Wallet at 30.

Getting the wallets early changes everything about how you handle money for the rest of the game. Our guide on all Gold Skulltula rewards covers all six milestones and why 50 is the sensible stopping point.

Bugs are how you summon several of them. Our guide on where to find bugs covers the soft soil trick.

The village has burned and changed, and two things open up.

The Shadow Temple, through the graveyard, after the story event here gives you the Nocturne of Shadow from Sheik.

The Biggoron’s Sword trade, which starts with the Cucco Lady handing you the Pocket Egg. It is twelve steps with three timed legs and it is worth beginning as early as you can. Our guide on the Biggoron Sword covers the whole chain.

The Bottom of the Well

Beneath the village, reachable as child Link after draining the water with the Song of Storms. The Lens of Truth is down there, and the Shadow Temple is effectively impossible without it.

This is the thing adult Link cannot go back for without returning to childhood, so it is worth doing in sequence. Our guide on what to do after the Water Temple covers where it fits.
