The split is the most useful thing to know before you start. You cannot see everything in one pass, so there is no reason to stress about “missing” the secret endings on a first run; they are locked behind a completed save by design.
Konami producer Motoi Okamoto confirmed on the official PlayStation Blog that the secret ending becomes accessible after clearing the game once. One small wrinkle: McKellan described two secret endings in a media roundtable, while Okamoto’s interview refers to “the secret ending” in the singular. The five-ending total has been stated consistently, so the most likely reading is three main endings plus two secret ones.
There Is No Single Big Choice
Townfall does not end on a binary decision in the final hour. According to the developers, the game tracks your behavior across the whole playthrough, including:
- How much you explore and investigate St. Amelia, including optional areas, documents and clues.
- How aggressive you are when confronted, versus avoiding or escaping fights.
That places it firmly in the tradition of Silent Hill 2, where endings reflected patterns in how you played rather than a menu choice. It also means you cannot simply reload a save before the finale to see a different result.
Some reviewers have described the ending requirements as obtuse, which fits a system built on accumulated behavior rather than signposted decisions. If you want a particular outcome, playing deliberately from the start matters more than anything you do at the end.
Is One Ending Canon?
No. Okamoto has said that no ending is designated as the canon one. Townfall is a self-contained story, so there is no sequel continuity forcing one outcome to be the “real” ending. Whichever you reach is a legitimate conclusion.
New Game Plus and Replaying for Endings
Finishing the game unlocks New Game Plus, and McKellan has said that repeat runs go faster because you unlock things that speed them up. Konami has not published a list of exactly what carries over.
