To raise the odds of having a boy in The Sims 3, have the pregnant Sim eat raw apples early in the pregnancy, several of them, and keep her away from watermelons. This is a real mechanic in the base game rather than a fan theory, but it shifts the odds instead of guaranteeing a result. Below we explain what is confirmed about how it works, the timing, which popular tips are myths, and the only way to pick the gender outright.
Whether the Apple Method Is Real
Yes, and there is better evidence for it than for most Sims folklore. We found no official EA help page that describes it, but it shows up in how the game is built:
- The documentation for NRaas MasterController, a long-running mod that works directly with the game’s code, describes a pregnancy value it calls the Gender Offset, “normally specified by eating Watermelons or Apples.”
- A mod on Mod The Sims exists purely to switch the mechanic off, and its description says an early patch narrowed it so that only raw apples and watermelons count.
So the mechanic is real. What the game never tells you is how strong it is, and that is where most guides overreach.
How to Do It
- Get apples before the pregnancy starts. Buy them at the supermarket, or grow them: apples are a common plant, so any Sim can plant them at Gardening level 0. Our gardening guide covers planting and harvesting.
- Start the pregnancy. Use Try for Baby, covered in our WooHoo guide.
- Eat the apples raw. Click an apple in the pregnant Sim’s inventory and choose Eat. Dishes made with apples do not count: the community wiki dates the change to patch 1.3, and the Mod The Sims description agrees that prepared food stopped affecting gender after a patch.
- Eat several, early. The community wiki says 3 or more apples in each trimester greatly increases the chance of a boy. An experienced moderator on the NRaas forums adds that servings count up to five and only during roughly the first half of the pregnancy, so front-load them.
- Avoid watermelon entirely. Watermelon pushes the odds toward a girl, and per the NRaas forum explanation, eating both fruits cancels them out.
Myths and Half-Truths
- The radio. Listening to a particular radio station to pick a gender is a Sims 4 mechanic: its Patch 17 added pop music for girls and alternative for boys, per the community wiki. We found no evidence that the radio affects gender in The Sims 3. In The Sims 3, children’s radio and TV are linked to the odds of multiples instead; see our twins guide.
- Who starts Try for Baby. The idea that the father initiating gives a boy is an old Sims 2 rumor that the community wiki lists as disproven.
- Apple pie and apple dishes. They stopped counting after patch 1.3. Only raw fruit works.
- The doctor locks it in. A Sim in the Medical career can use Determine Gender of Baby on a pregnant Sim. The community wiki places this at level 5 of the career, while one player guide says it takes a higher rank, and some guides claim the check fixes the gender so fruit no longer matters. We could not confirm that last part, so treat the check as a preview, not a lock.
Twins, Triplets and the Limits of the Method
Even with a full diet of apples, the result is not certain. With twins or triplets, the community wiki notes you can still get a mix of boys and girls, and the NRaas documentation describes the extra babies’ genders as handled separately from the first. If you are planning a large family, expect some variety.
If you ended up with a girl, our companion guide on how to have a girl covers the watermelon side. Adopting is the other way to choose exactly: the adoption service lets you pick the gender directly, as our adoption guide explains.
The Guaranteed Method: MasterController
If a boy is non-negotiable, install NRaas MasterController with its Cheats module (our Sims 3 mod install guide covers setup). Click the pregnant Sim, choose NRaas, Master Controller, then Basic, Baby, and Baby Gender. Per NRaas’s documentation, this sets the gender of the first-born child of the current pregnancy. The Gender Offset option in the same menu changes the fruit value directly.
Note that if you also run NRaas StoryProgression, a moderator on the NRaas forums explains that its Newborn Gender setting must be set to Random for fruit to have any effect at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many apples should a pregnant Sim eat for a boy? The community wiki recommends 3 or more per trimester. NRaas forum guidance says servings stop adding up after five and only count in the first part of the pregnancy, so eat five soon after it starts.
Do cooked apple dishes work? No. Only raw apples count after patch 1.3.
Does listening to the radio help in The Sims 3? We found no evidence that it affects gender in The Sims 3. The radio trick belongs to The Sims 4, which has its own baby boy method.
Can I guarantee a boy without mods? No. Fruit only shifts the odds. MasterController’s Baby Gender option or adoption are the only sure routes.
Does the father’s diet matter? No. Everything we found ties the effect to what the pregnant Sim eats. More family guides are on the Sims hub.
