You cannot move the boxes in front of the bell on the Gizmo Shop roof yourself: no attack, spell or Trinity shifts them, and they clear on their own once you reach the right point in the story. That point comes on your second visit to Traverse Town, after you have learned the Red Trinity, talked to Cid about the gummi pieces and taken his Old Book to Merlin.
Below we walk through the exact sequence that clears the boxes, how to get up to the bell, what ringing it does, and how the versions differ.
Which Version This Guide Covers
This guide covers Kingdom Hearts Final Mix in KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-, which is how the game is sold today on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch cloud version was pulled from sale on June 9, 2026, per Square Enix, and stays playable for existing owners until June 9, 2027. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts Collection I~III, which includes these same games running natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store, and Switch cloud owners can transfer their saves to the Switch 2 version. The bell sequence is part of the main story and plays out the same way in the original 2002 PS2 release.
The only control difference is how you interact with things. In the HD version, contextual actions like Examine and Trinity are triggered with Triangle on PlayStation (Y on an Xbox-layout pad). In the original PS2 game, they appear in the bottom slot of the command menu instead.
Why the Boxes Will Not Move
The bell sits on the roof of the Gizmo Shop in the Second District. There is a Red Trinity mark up there, along the back wall, and in front of the bell sits a stack of boxes. Early on, most players climb up expecting to do something with the bell and find the way blocked.
The boxes are a story lock, not a puzzle. Player answers on long-running question-and-answer boards all say the same thing: nothing you do on the roof moves them, and they disappear once the story reaches the right beat. You will also need the Red Trinity itself, which the community wiki says Sora, Donald and Goofy learn after sealing the Keyhole in Deep Jungle. Player guides tie the whole sequence to the second visit to Traverse Town, after the Keyholes in Deep Jungle and Wonderland are sealed.
The Story Steps That Clear the Boxes
Per the community wiki’s walkthrough, the sequence runs like this:
- Break into the Secret Waterway. In the Second District, go through the door by the fountain into the Alleyway. At the far end near the Dalmatians’ House, use the Red Trinity on the grate to break through.
- Talk to Leon. He is inside the Secret Waterway. He tells you to see Cid about the strange gummi pieces you have been collecting.
- Talk to Cid in the Accessory Shop. He offers to install the pieces as navigation gummis, but asks you to deliver his Old Book to someone in the Third District first. The bell rings around this point, which is your cue that something has changed.
- Open the flame door. In the Third District, drop to the open lower area where you fought the Guard Armor and look for the red door with a flame on it. Cast Fire on it to open it.
- Reach the Mystical House. Cross the moving stones to the island and go through the gap in the wall. Hand over the Old Book to Merlin.
- Go to the house in the Third District. Merlin sends you back to Cid. Examine the large keyhole to open the door between the First and Third Districts, then head up the stairs to the house. A story scene plays and Cid gives you the Warp-G.
After that scene, the group suggests going to the bell. When you climb back up to the Gizmo Shop roof, the boxes are gone.
How to Ring the Bell
Get onto the Gizmo Shop roof from inside the Gizmo Shop, then:
- Stand on the Red Trinity mark along the back wall, with Donald and Goofy in your party.
- Activate the Trinity. The trio charges through and opens the way to the bell.
- Ring the bell three times.
Ringing it three times reveals Traverse Town’s Keyhole, which appears at the fountain. Save first: dropping back down starts a boss fight. Player guides identify it as the Opposite Armor, a tougher return of the Guard Armor you fought on your first visit, and the Keyhole can only be sealed once it falls.
Beating it seals Traverse Town, gives you another navigation gummi to hand to Cid, and opens the route onward to Agrabah.
If the Boxes Are Still There
If you have climbed back up and the boxes have not moved, one of the steps above has not triggered yet. The most common misses, from the same player question threads:
- You have not learned the Red Trinity. Seal Deep Jungle first.
- You skipped Leon. Cid will not bring up the gummi pieces or the Old Book until Leon has told you to see him. One player notes that talking to Leon a second time is what prompts the Cid conversation.
- You have not delivered the book. The Mystical House door needs the Fire spell, and it is easy to walk past.
- You have not watched the house scene. The group only points you to the bell after the meeting in the Third District house.
Once all four are done, the boxes are cleared for good. The bell is not the only thing in Traverse Town gated by the Red Trinity and later abilities, either: several chests are too, which we cover in our guide to opening the chests in Traverse Town. The Item Workshop above the Accessory Shop, where you build the Ultima Weapon, opens on a later visit. If you are pacing out a first playthrough, our guide to how long Kingdom Hearts takes to beat gives a sense of the overall length.

What happens after ringing the bell? A boss fight starts when you drop back down. Player guides identify it as the Opposite Armor.
