You get the Ultima Weapon in Kingdom Hearts by synthesizing it at the Moogles’ Item Workshop in Traverse Town, and in Final Mix it only appears on the workshop’s last list after you have synthesized all 30 other items on Lists I to V. The recipe itself is 5 Thunder Gems, 5 Mystery Goo, 3 Serenity Power, 3 Stormy Stones and 3 Dark Matter.
The rest of this guide covers how to open the workshop, how the list unlocks work, where each of the five materials comes from, and how the recipe differs in the original PS2 release.
Which Version This Guide Covers
This guide covers Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, the version inside KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-. That collection is the current way to play the first game, on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch cloud version was pulled from sale on June 9, 2026, per Square Enix, and stays playable for existing owners until June 9, 2027. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts Collection I~III, which includes these same games running natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store, and Switch cloud owners can transfer their saves to the Switch 2 version. The original 2002 PS2 release also has the Ultima Weapon, but its recipe and unlock requirement are different. We cover that in its own section below so you can tell which one applies to your copy.
Its in-game description reads “The ultimate Keyblade. Raises max MP by 2, and possesses maximum power and attributes.”
How to Open the Item Workshop
Synthesis happens in one place only: the Item Workshop, run by three Moogles, above the Accessory Shop in Traverse Town’s First District.
- Seal the Keyhole in Agrabah. The community wiki notes that this is when Sora, Donald and Goofy learn the Green Trinity (Trinity Ladder).
- On a later visit to Traverse Town, go into the Accessory Shop and stand on the Green Trinity mark on the floor.
- Activate it (Triangle on PlayStation, Y on an Xbox-layout pad in the HD version) and the trio forms a ladder up to the workshop.
Once the workshop is open, you can come back any time.
How the Synthesis Lists Unlock
Recipes come in numbered lists, and each list opens after you create a set number of unique items from the lists before it. The count is of unique items: making the same Mega-Potion ten times only counts once.
Per the community wiki, Final Mix has 33 synthesizable items across six lists:
- List I is available as soon as the workshop opens.
- List II opens after 3 unique items from List I.
- List III opens after 9 unique items from Lists I and II.
- List IV opens after 15 unique items from Lists I to III.
- List V opens after 21 unique items from Lists I to IV.
- List VI opens after all 30 items on Lists I to V. This final list holds the Ultima Weapon, plus Donald’s Fantasista and Goofy’s Seven Elements.
The Final Mix Recipe and Where to Farm Each Material
The Final Mix recipe is 5 Thunder Gems, 5 Mystery Goo, 3 Serenity Power, 3 Stormy Stones and 3 Dark Matter. Here is where each one comes from, per the community wiki’s drop tables.
Thunder Gem. Dropped by Aquatank and Screwdiver Heartless in Atlantica. White Mushrooms also drop them: they mimic the spells you cast at them, and casting Thunder on one three times in a row gives the best odds. Bambi in Deep Jungle can drop one too.
Mystery Goo. Dropped only by the three mushroom Heartless: the White Mushroom, the Black Fungus and the Rare Truffle. The wiki notes each has its own condition, such as juggling a Rare Truffle in the air to raise the odds.
Serenity Power. Dropped only by the Pink Agaricus, a mushroom Heartless that player guides place in Deep Jungle. The wiki notes that the drop becomes certain once you hit it 100 times, so a long combo is the reliable method.
Stormy Stone. Dropped by the Neoshadow, found in End of the World. The wiki notes a specific condition: the drop chance applies when it is the seventh Neoshadow you defeat in that area.
Dark Matter. This is the one that trips most players up. It does not drop from enemies in Final Mix. You get it from treasure chests (the wiki lists nine, including one in the Tea Party Garden in Wonderland, covered in our guide to the Tea Party Garden chests), from winning the Pegasus Cup time trial, and from synthesis. Dark Matter sits on List V, and the wiki gives its recipe as 9 Lucid Shards, 2 Mythril and 1 Gale.
Player guides also suggest equipping Lucky Strike on all three party members to raise drop rates.
How the Original PS2 Version Differs
The original Kingdom Hearts has fewer items to synthesize and a different Ultima Weapon recipe. Per the community wiki:
- There are 25 synthesizable items in five lists, and List V holds only the Ultima Weapon. It opens after you create all 24 items on Lists I to IV.
- The recipe is 5 Lucid Gems, 5 Power Gems, 5 Thunder Gems, 3 Mystery Goo and 3 Gale.
- Dark Matter, Serenity Power and Stormy Stone are not part of the recipe in that version.
Is It Worth the Grind
Most of the materials fall into place naturally if you are already cleaning up optional content. The grind mostly comes down to Serenity Power, Stormy Stones and the Dark Matter count. If you are planning a full completion run, our guide to how long Kingdom Hearts takes to beat gives a sense of the time involved, and the Thunder Gem farming happens in Atlantica, the same world where you beat Ursula. The Keyblade also makes the optional Olympus Coliseum cups far more manageable, long after the story’s Cerberus fight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you synthesize the Ultima Weapon? At the Item Workshop above the Accessory Shop in Traverse Town’s First District. You open it by using the Green Trinity inside the Accessory Shop.
How many items do you need to synthesize before Ultima Weapon unlocks? In Final Mix, all 30 items on Lists I to V. In the original PS2 version, all 24 items on Lists I to IV.
Can Dark Matter drop from enemies? Not in Final Mix. The community wiki lists it only in treasure chests, as a reward from the Pegasus Cup time trial and the Jade Spiral course, and as a synthesis recipe.
What is the fastest material to get wrong? Stormy Stones. They only come from Neoshadows at End of the World, and the wiki ties the drop chance to the seventh one you defeat, so expect several runs through the area.
Is the Ultima Weapon the same in Kingdom Hearts 2? No. Kingdom Hearts 2 has its own Ultima Weapon with a separate synthesis system run through the Moogle Shops, and a different recipe.
