Yes, you can play most of AION 2 solo: questing, flight exploration, a large set of solo dungeons and the daily activities are all built for one player, and NC says rewards from solo content count toward your character’s progression. Its top-end PvE and faction PvP are group content, but built-in party matching means you rarely need a guild to take part.
This guide covers what you can do alone, what needs a group, how matchmaking works, how to limit PvP, trading as a solo player, and which class suits playing alone. It covers the global release (Founder’s early access September 30, 2026, launch October 5). Content names come from NC’s English announcements for the Korean and Taiwanese version, live since November 2025, and may differ slightly in the global client.
What You Can Do Alone
The Steam store page sets expectations: “From solo instances to large-scale raids,” with “Over 200 dungeons” that “span multiple formats: solo challenges, 5-player party content, and 10-player group dungeons.”
NC’s content breakdown from the Korean reveal listed four solo modes: Nightmare Dungeon, Seal Dungeon, Garrison and Awakening Battle (later announcements use the names Sealed Dungeons and Ascension Trial). NC’s Korean updates call Nightmare and the Ascension Trial “AION 2’s solo dungeons”: Nightmare stacks boss layers, and the Ascension Trial climbs to a Doom difficulty for well-geared characters.
At gamescom 2026, NC told VGTimes that in these modes “you will fight a boss one-on-one, as if competing with yourself,” and that “All rewards you receive for completing solo content will be taken into account when leveling up your character. We really wanted the progression system to match your playstyle.”
Beyond dungeons, a solo player has:
- The story and open world, which NC says is 36 times larger than the original AION, with flight in every region and underwater exploration.
- Daily dungeons and open-world events.
- The Shugo Festival, a set of mini-games where the Steam page says you “Protect the Shugos from waves of enemies, race pets against other players, dodge lasers, and more.”
One thing to know going in: AION 2 has no auto-combat. NC built it around manual, skill-based fights, so playing solo means actually playing every fight, not leaving a character to farm on its own.
What Needs a Group
The highest tiers of PvE are party content. Per NC’s announcements, these are:
- Expedition dungeons, for five players.
- Transcendence dungeons, for five players.
- Sanctuary, NC’s hardest PvE, for 10 players.
Those sizes match the Steam page’s five- and 10-player formats, and NC’s Korean Chapter 1 update confirms them there. Newer players get some help: at the Korean reveal NC promised Easy Mode instance dungeons “tailored for newcomers.”
How Party Matching Works
You do not need a Legion to run group content. NC’s Early Access: How It Will Work update explains the global setup:
- During early access, dungeon party matching pulls players from every Early Access server in your region, “so finding a group is never limited to a single server.”
- From launch on October 5, the pool expands to include both Early Access and Launch servers in the same region.
- Friends on different servers “can always party up for dungeons and add each other as friends.”

Keeping PvP to a Minimum
Elyos and Asmodians live on separate servers, and their fights center on the Abyss, the shared battleground where NC says players “fight over field bosses, artifacts, and Abyss Points,” and on Spacetime Rift events that bring the factions into each other’s territory.
You still choose whether to fight. NC’s Korean guidebook says every character starts in PVE mode, and you only fight the other faction after clicking the PVE button (to the right of the mount icon at the bottom center of the screen) to switch to PVP mode. Per NC’s December 2025 update, which introduced the toggle as War Mode, you can only switch inside your faction’s territory, with a 70-minute cooldown. Two things flip you to PVP mode for 10 minutes anyway: attacking an enemy-faction player, NPC or Kisk, or a nearby party member turning PVP mode on. NC has not published the global client’s rules yet, so treat these as Korean-version details.
Trading as a Solo Player
The Market is where a solo player buys gear they do not want to group for, and it has a catch. NC’s Team Update on the business model says “An active Membership is required to trade on the Market.” Its membership notice is more precise: without one, you can list items for sale but cannot buy.

The Best Class for Playing Alone
When NC revealed the eight classes, it described exactly one as solo-focused: the Spiritmaster, “Optimized for solo play.” The Sorcerer (“High burst magic damage”) and Gladiator (“Powerful, wide-area skill attacks”) are the other natural picks for clearing groups of enemies alone.
