GTA 6 lets you switch between Jason and Lucia at almost any time, much like GTA 5 let you swap between its three leads. The exception is story missions: some lock you to one character, some switch you automatically, and some let you swap freely, according to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson.
Below we cover how switching works, when you can’t do it, what the other character gets up to while you’re away, and how it ties into the police and the relationship. How Switching Works
Game Informer’s cover story confirms it: “Like GTAV, players can switch between these characters at almost any time.” IGN’s preview describes jumping between them “GTA 5-style.”
The big difference from GTA 5 is that the two are usually together. Jason and Lucia work as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style robbery team, so during missions the other is “often right by your side,” per Game Informer. Why two characters instead of three? Nelson told IGN that more characters risked “diluting the amount of player time with each.” He told the New York Times that Rockstar considered four playable characters before settling on “that Bonnie and Clyde concept.”
When You Can’t Switch
Switching is limited in some story missions. “Sometimes [switching] is limited by story progression… like GTA 5, we limit switching,” Nelson told the Japanese magazine Famitsu. He described three kinds of mission:
- Locked to one character. An early mission on a high-rise keeps you as Jason throughout.
- Forced switches. In a bank getaway, you shoot as Jason, then the game moves you to Lucia behind the wheel while Jason and Raul Bautista shoot.
- Free switching. In the attack shown at the end of the trailer, you can swap whenever you like.
So headlines saying you “can’t switch whenever you want” overstate it. The limits apply to specific missions; in the open world, switching is open.
What the Other Character Does While You’re Away
When they’re apart, the character you aren’t playing lives their own life. Nelson told Famitsu they act “according to their own schedule. You can switch control to either one, or bring the two together.” Vice, relaying preview reports, adds that you may get casual texts from the other one.
You can also call them over. IGN reports that you can call or text your partner at any time and they’ll travel to your location.
Playing as a Pair
Together, you get options GTA 5 never had. Nelson told Famitsu you can:
- Rob a place alone or bring your partner along.
- Send Lucia off alone to deliver the loot.
- Let Jason drive while you check your phone as Lucia.
IGN’s preview adds that you can swap seats while driving, and Kotaku reports the pair can hold hands while walking even though you only control one of them. Those small moments feed the relationship, which our guide to Jason and Lucia’s romance explains.
Switching and the Police
Splitting up is a real escape tactic. Once the police are after you, they know Jason and Lucia are a pair, and Nelson told IGN that splitting up “will also help lower the police’s perception of you.” Our guide to the Heat system covers the rest of the evidence police track.
There’s a catch. Game Informer says getting arrested “results in a ‘Busted’ screen even if the other protagonist escapes.” Preview reports add that the arrested character later returns to the open world, and the partner who got away can stay at large in the meantime.
Can You Play as Only One Character
Not for the whole game, based on what Rockstar has described. Some missions force a switch to the other character, so a single-character playthrough doesn’t look possible. That’s our reading of Nelson’s comments, not a Rockstar statement. Outside missions, you can spend as much time as you like with either one; preview reports say favoring one character won’t make the other leave.
Controls Aren’t Confirmed Yet
Rockstar hasn’t shown the switching controls. In GTA 5 you held down on the D-pad to open the character wheel, and some sites assume GTA 6 does the same, but that hasn’t been confirmed. We’ll update this guide at launch.
