The partnership itself is fixed. Game Informer’s cover story puts it simply: “You can’t break them up, but you can influence whether they remain friends or bloom into a romantic couple.” Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN they “will remain partners in crime… whether they’re romantically close or not doesn’t change that.”
The romance is where your choices come in. Nelson said “we start Jason and Lucia off wanting to give it a shot, but just going through the story and playing missions together may not be enough to keep them together.” In other words, the story gives them a chance, and you decide whether it lasts.
Rockstar’s official character pages set up the pair. Jason “grew up around grifters and crooks” and, after the Army, ended up in the Keys working for local drug runners. Lucia was taught to fight by her father, and “fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary.”
What Builds the Relationship
Game Informer lists the actions that grow Jason and Lucia’s romantic bond:
- Doing missions together.
- Holding hands. Kotaku, describing the Extended Look, says they can hold hands as they walk, even while you control only one of them.
- Opening doors for each other.
- Calling, and answering calls and texts “promptly and regularly.” The New York Times, describing Rockstar’s demo, says even holding hands leaving a clothing store “will require effort: hanging out, responding to texts.”
- Accepting invitations to do activities together.
- Robbing places as a duo. Game Informer says this “grows their relationship,” and Nelson confirmed “robbing stores together, robbing banks together” has “a positive impact.”
How Dates Work
There are no scripted date missions, according to reports from creators who attended the previews. Instead, you invite your partner to things in the open world. Nelson’s list of date ideas: “Robbing places together, or walking around, holding hands, going to a zoo, studying animals, going scuba diving, parachuting, walking on the beach, kayaking.” He also named pool and mini golf.

What Happens If You Neglect It
The romance can fade. Nelson told the Japanese magazine Famitsu that without deepening the relationship, “options like holding hands or kissing are lost. However, you can restore the relationship through effort.” Vice, relaying reports from the previews, adds that repeatedly dismissing your partner’s texts may damage the connection.
The friendship doesn’t end, though. Even at their coolest, the two keep working together.
How to Check Where You Stand
“A status showing their relationship, and your bank balance, can be checked in-game,” Nelson told Famitsu. Preview reports describe it as a set of states rather than a traditional meter, shown in a Jason and Lucia menu.
This is separate from the game’s record of what kind of criminal you are. “There is a system that tracks what sort of criminal you are. And then there is also a relationship system… They’re separate,” Nelson told IGN. The police side of things is covered in our guide to the Heat system.
Does It Change the Story
Yes, though Rockstar hasn’t said how. Nelson told IGN that nurturing the relationship “will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out,” and Game Informer says “certain elements of the story will be affected by Jason and Lucia’s bond.”
There’s no gameplay reward either way. Game Informer says being a couple brings no gameplay benefits over staying friends, calling it “largely a role-playing option.” Nelson was blunt about skipping it: “Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.”
For the bigger picture, Nelson told the New York Times the story asks “whether love can survive through this storm,” and that tying meaning to “how you treat your partner” is “new for GTA.”
Claims That Aren’t True (or Aren’t Confirmed)
- Jason and Lucia can break up. Not as partners. The romance can fade, but Game Informer and Nelson both say they stay together as a crew.
- There are other romance options. Nothing official mentions romancing anyone else, and the reports about cheating or strip clubs hurting the relationship trace back to social media posts, not Rockstar.
- You hold a specific button to hold hands. Outlets confirm a “hold hands” option exists, but the button hasn’t been confirmed.
- There’s a relationship meter. Rockstar calls it a “status,” and preview reports describe states, not a bar.
