Xbox’s Disc to Digital feature is now available to every player, not just Xbox Insiders, Xbox announced in an official post on X on September 29, 2026: “Now, all players can experience the benefits of digital with most XBOX Series X and XBOX One physical discs.” The feature had been in testing with Insiders since the end of August, after its Xbox Wire reveal on August 26.
How to Turn a Disc Into a Digital License
Xbox’s support page explains the process:
- Play the disc while signed in. Running “any supported XBOX One or XBOX Series X game disc while signed in will grant you a digital license,” and a confirmation appears.
- Or claim it by hand. Press the Menu button on the game’s tile and choose Get digital license, then Claim.
- Use any disc-drive Xbox. “Any XBOX console with an optical disc drive can be used to claim.”
Which Discs Work, and the Catches
- Not supported: Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs.
- Multi-disc games: use disc one.
- Add-ons: content from redemption codes or DLC codes may not be included.
- PC and handhelds: Xbox Play Anywhere games you license this way become playable there too.
- Keep the disc. If you no longer have it, Xbox says the license “may be limited or revoked”; putting the disc back in reclaims it.
Xbox’s official material doesn’t mention any fee.
What This Means for Players
If you own an Xbox One or Series X disc collection, this is the easiest way to play those games on an all-digital console, a PC or a handheld. If the option isn’t showing up yet, an Xbox engineering lead posted on X that “you may need to restart your console.” It comes just after Xbox’s other big player-requested feature, Mythic Achievements for Insiders.
