Writing songs in The Sims 4 is a great way for your musically inclined Sims to earn money, express creativity, and eventually license music for passive income. If you’re ready to compose a Simlish hit, here’s how to write songs step-by-step.
Step 1: Reach Level 8 in a Musical Instrument Skill
Your Sim can’t start writing songs until they’re skilled enough. You’ll need to:
- Reach Level 8 in one of these instrument skills:
- Guitar
- Piano
- Violin
- Pipe Organ (available with the Vampires game pack)
- Singing (City Living expansion pack)
Step 2: Use the Instrument in The Sims 4 to Start Writing
Once your Sim hits Level 8, click on the instrument and choose “Write Song.” A list of available song types will appear based on your Sim’s skill level and mood.
While writing:
- The process takes several in-game hours to complete
- Progress saves automatically if you cancel and resume later
Step 3: Finish the Song
When your Sim finishes writing the song, they’ll be prompted to name it. The song will then appear in your Sim’s inventory.
Tip: You can only work on one song at a time per instrument skill. Finish one before starting another.
Step 4: License the Song
Once your Sim reaches Level 9 in The Sims 4 with the instrument skill, they can license songs for royalties.
- Use the mailbox and select “License Song”
- Choose a completed song from your inventory
- Your Sim will receive daily royalties for about a week
Note: You can only license one song per instrument per week.
Additional Tips
- Inspired Mood Helps: Being Inspired boosts songwriting speed and quality.
- Use Traits Wisely: Creative and Music Lover traits help your Sim stay focused and enjoy songwriting.
- Song Royalties Stack: The more instruments you master, the more songs you can license weekly.
With time and talent, your Sim can build a music empire in The Sims 4, one hit at a time.
