Characters in Mario Kart World unlock three ways: by playing through Grand Prix, by being transformed by the Kamek item during a race, and, for a handful of them, by eating Dash Food in Free Roam. Those are the three methods Nintendo lists in its own tips article, and none of the free updates through Version 1.8.0 (September 2026) have added a fourth. Below we walk through each method, explain which one most players overlook, and note where the 2025 advice has gone stale.
Method 1: Play Grand Prix
Per the developer, some characters can be unlocked just by playing Grand Prix. Pick Grand Prix from the main menu, choose a cup and an engine class, and complete all four courses. When the cup finishes, any character tied to it is added to your roster with a notification.
Two details that guides written at launch often got wrong, according to player reports since: the engine class does not matter, and neither does your final placement. Clearing the cup is what counts, so a 50cc run in last place still triggers the unlock. If you want to play it safe, take the cup at 100cc and aim for a finish, but there is no evidence you need a podium. Community counts put the number of Grand Prix unlocks at seven; Nintendo has not published a figure, so treat that as a player-sourced number.
The Grand Prix runs you do here also count toward Mirror Mode, which wants 150cc placements in every cup, so it is worth doing them once at 150cc rather than twice.
Method 2: Get Hit by Kamek
The Kamek item is new to Mario Kart World. Per the official Items and Techniques page, throwing it transforms your rivals with Kamek’s magic. When a rival uses it on you, you spend a short stretch of the race as a different character, and Nintendo’s tips confirm that being transformed by Kamek unlocks that character for good.
You cannot control which character Kamek hands you, and you cannot use Kamek on yourself to trigger it: the transformation only unlocks characters when it lands on you. That makes this the slowest method to force, and the fastest to stumble into. Ways to tilt the odds:
- Race in item-heavy modes. Standard VS Race with the default item set, and online Knockout Tour with 24 players, throw far more items around than a Grand Prix against COM rivals.
- Sit mid-pack. Kamek is a mid-field item in practice; the player who fires it is usually not in first, and the racers in front of them get hit.
- Turn off Custom Items filters that exclude Kamek. Version 1.4.0 (December 2025) added Custom Items to VS Race, Balloon Battle, Coin Runners and rooms, and a filtered set with Kamek removed will never unlock anyone.
Version 1.7.0 (June 2026) made it possible to hop right away after being hit by Kamek’s magic, which shortens the penalty; the unlock still fires on the hit. Version 1.5.0 (January 2026) also fixed a bug where the game could end when Kamek was used on Choco Mountain, so if you avoided that course in 2025, it is safe now.
Method 3: Eat Dash Food in Free Roam
This is the method most players miss because it is better known for outfits. Dash Food comes from Yoshi’s restaurants and drive-throughs across the open world; per the Items and Techniques page it gives a short burst of speed and “your outfit may change.” Nintendo’s tips add that some characters, not just outfits, are unlocked this way.
Press + on the main menu to enter Free Roam, press Y to open the map, and look for the restaurant icons. Drive through the pickup window to grab the Dash Food. Which food a location serves depends on the location, so the character tied to a particular dish means visiting the right restaurant. Version 1.4.0 shortened the time between Dash Food being taken and reappearing, so cycling a restaurant with several characters is quicker than it was at launch. Our guide to unlocking costumes covers the outfit side of the same system.
Roster Size and What the Updates Changed
Nintendo has not published an official roster count. Player tallies put the full roster at 50, with 32 available from the start and 18 to unlock, and describe roughly half the total as the “NPC” set of enemies and bystanders (Pokey, Penguin, Dolphin and friends) that mostly arrive via Kamek. Those are widely repeated but unofficial numbers.
We read every version’s notes in the official update history. The day-one Version 1.1.0 patch expanded the character selection available at the start, so a physical copy played without updating shows fewer starters than the numbers above. No later version adds playable characters or changes the three unlock methods; the 2026 updates added Knockout Tour rallies, the SNES courses, Bob-omb Blast and Spectator Mode instead. Unlocks are shared across every mode and every vehicle you have earned from our guide to unlocking karts, and the whole cluster lives on the Mario Kart World guides hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to finish in the top three to unlock a character from a cup? Player reports since launch say no: clearing the cup is enough, regardless of placement or engine class. The 2025 advice to podium at 50cc or 150cc was more cautious than the game requires.
Can I use Kamek on myself to unlock characters? No. The transformation unlocks a character only when a rival’s Kamek lands on you, so play item-heavy races and let it happen.
Are there characters that only unlock through Dash Food? Nintendo’s tips say some characters are unlocked via Dash Food, and player lists name a small set tied to specific restaurants. Check the Free Roam map for restaurant icons and visit each one.
Did any free update add characters? No. Versions 1.2.0 through 1.8.0 added modes, courses and balance changes; the only roster note is the day-one 1.1.0 patch expanding the starting selection.
How many characters are in Mario Kart World? There is no official figure. Community counts settle on 50, with 32 unlocked from the start on an updated game.
