Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered: How to Unlock Ziluan

Ziluan, the Dynasty Warriors Origins protagonist, in close-up against falling embers in Dynasty Warriors 3 Complete Edition Remastered

To unlock Ziluan in Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered, clear Musou Mode once with one of the officers available from the start. Early player guides name Zhao Yun, Zhou Yu and Xiahou Dun as confirmed routes, and one clear on any difficulty is enough. Ziluan has no Musou Mode story of his own, so once unlocked you use him in Free Mode, Challenge Mode, VS Mode, or as the second player in co-op.

Ziluan is the only officer in DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered who was not in the 2001 original. Koei Tecmo’s launch press release confirms that “over 40 officers from the original roster make their return alongside DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS protagonist Ziluan.” Below is how to get him, what he plays like, and how to unlock the other two bonus officers, Fuxi and Nuwa.

Who Ziluan Is

Koei Tecmo’s official site introduces him as “the protagonist of DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS. A traveling swordsman who comes to be known as Ziluan. Despite the lost memories of his past, he fights with the convictions that remain deep in his heart.” He is a guest from the newest mainline game, and the site gives him his own character illustration alongside the 41 returning officers.

How to Unlock Ziluan

  1. Pick one of the nine starting officers: Zhao Yun, Guan Yu or Zhang Fei (Shu), Xiahou Dun, Dian Wei or Zhang He (Wei), or Zhou Yu, Sun Shangxiang or Huang Gai (Wu).
  2. Play through that officer’s Musou Mode story to the ending, on any difficulty.
  3. Ziluan joins the officer select screen after the clear.

Launch guides disagree on wording. One describes the condition as “Finish Musou Mode once,” another as a clear “with a character available by default,” and a third confirms it with Zhao Yun, Zhou Yu and Xiahou Dun specifically. All three point the same way: your first Musou clear with a starting officer should do it. Since a single clear also opens new officers in that kingdom, Ziluan usually arrives alongside your first wave of unlocks.

Easy is the quickest route. Musou Mode clears count on every difficulty, according to remaster guides, and a full story on Easy takes far less time than on Hard.

Where You Can Play Ziluan

Because Ziluan has no story, he works a little differently from the main cast:

  • Free Mode: any unlocked stage, on any side.
  • Challenge Mode: score attack modes like Endurance and Time Attack.
  • VS Mode: head-to-head two-player stages.
  • Musou Mode as player two: in offline split screen, the second player can pick him while player one plays their story, according to early player guides.

Early impressions on the Steam forums are mixed. One player who maxed him out called his moveset “pretty zippy and unreliable at times,” adding that the AI plays him poorly when he is assigned as a bodyguard. He still has the novelty of a modern Dynasty Warriors hero in a 2001 battlefield, and Weapon Fusion means you can give his weapon the element you want.

How to Unlock Fuxi and Nuwa

Fuxi and Nuwa are the other two bonus officers. Like Ziluan, they have no Musou Mode story; they are reward characters for clearing lots of stories. Their conditions in the original game, which launch guides for the remaster list unchanged:

Officer Unlock condition
Fuxi Clear Musou Mode with Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian
Nuwa Clear Musou Mode with Daqiao, Xiaoqiao, Sun Shangxiang and Zhenji

In the original, Fuxi also required Lu Bu to be unlocked, so finish Hulao Gate with 1,000 KOs at some point along the way.

Both need officers you have to unlock first. Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian each need two Musou clears in their kingdom, and Daqiao, Xiaoqiao and Zhenji need their own unlock clears, so Fuxi and Nuwa tend to come late.

Tips for Getting All Three Fast

  • Clear a starting officer first for Ziluan and the first tier of unlocks in that kingdom.
  • Plan your clears around Fuxi. Two Wei, two Shu and two Wu clears unlock Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Jian; then clear with each of them.
  • Clear with Sun Shangxiang early. She is a starter and one of the four Nuwa needs.
  • Bring a partner. A strong second player can carry a weak officer through a story, which speeds up clears for Fuxi and Nuwa.
