Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4: The Switch 2 Version Explained

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 23, the same day as every other platform, with the full Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. Infinity Ward is building it natively for Switch 2 with Digital Legends, and it is the first Modern Warfare game on a Nintendo console in more than a decade.

Digital pre-orders on the Nintendo eShop get the same campaign and DMZ early access as other platforms, and the game supports crossplay and cross-progression. Below is everything Activision has confirmed about the Switch 2 version, from editions and controls to online requirements, and the few things it has not said yet.

Updated October 16, 2026: campaign early access is live on Switch 2. Activision announced it at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) today for every platform, Nintendo Switch 2 included, so we replaced the expected unlock time with the confirmed one.

What Is in the Switch 2 Version

Activision’s Switch 2 announcement promises “a new Campaign, best-in-class Multiplayer, and the brand-new DMZ extraction experience” on Switch 2, which is the same three-mode package as on PS5, Xbox and PC. There is no separate cut-down edition.

Development details from Activision:

  • Native, not streamed. “Infinity Ward, in partnership with Digital Legends, is developing Modern Warfare 4 natively for Nintendo Switch 2.”
  • Same-day launch. Switch 2 is part of the worldwide October 23 release, not a later port.
  • Switch 2 only. Activision lists Nintendo Switch 2 as the Nintendo platform. The original Switch is not on the list.

Editions, Prices and Pre-Orders

Switch 2 pre-orders opened on August 26. On the Nintendo eShop you can pick:

  • Standard Edition, $69.99 (digital).
  • Vault Edition, $99.99 (digital), with two operator packs, five Signature Weapons, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ starter kit.
  • Physical Standard Edition at retailers. There is no physical Vault Edition on any platform.

Our Modern Warfare 4 edition guide breaks down what the Vault Edition adds and whether it is worth the extra money.

Two pre-order differences matter on Switch 2:

  • The Hunter Killer skin is for Modern Warfare 4 only. On other platforms that bonus can be used right away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone. Activision limits that instant use to Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net and Steam pre-orders, so on Switch 2 you get the skin in Modern Warfare 4 at launch.
  • The Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint has the mil-spec look. Its translucent green Xbox anniversary finish is for Xbox Series X and S only. The weapon itself is identical.

Early Access on Switch 2

Yes, Switch 2 gets early access. Activision includes Nintendo Switch 2 in both early windows for digital pre-orders of either edition:

  • Campaign early access: live since 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on Friday, October 16. Activision’s announcement names the “Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition of the game” on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other five platforms.
  • DMZ early access: Tuesday, October 20. Activision has not given an hour.

Physical pre-orders do not qualify on any platform. Our campaign early access guide covers how to set it up, the sixteen missions and the completion rewards you carry into launch.

Controls, Handheld Play and Crossplay

Activision’s Switch 2 announcement lists the console-specific features:

  • Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, so you can aim with a Joy-Con 2 used like a mouse.
  • Gyro aiming.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller support.
  • HDR.
  • Handheld play, plus TV and tabletop modes.
  • Cross-play and cross-progression with “the broader Call of Duty community,” so you can squad up with friends on other platforms and keep your progress.

The August open beta was the first look at all of this. Switch 2 players joined the open beta weekend alongside every other platform, with Multiplayer, the campaign mission “Entrenched” and Warzone Resurgence on the Zodiac map, all with no pre-order needed.

What You Need to Play Online

  • Nintendo Switch Online. Activision and the eShop listing both say a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play.
  • An Activision account. Activision required one for multiplayer in the Switch 2 beta, and says a mobile phone number linked to that account may be required to play.
  • A constant connection for Multiplayer and DMZ. Activision says the game streams textures across all modes, so both need an internet connection the whole time.

Plan for the download too. Activision has not listed the Switch 2 file size, and the eShop page does not show one yet.

What Activision Has Not Confirmed

  • Performance targets. Activision has not published resolution or frame-rate targets for Switch 2. Early impressions from the August beta described multiplayer running close to 60 fps with occasional dips and visible cuts to resolution and texture detail. Treat that as a beta report, not a launch spec.
  • Split screen. Activision’s support page lists split-screen multiplayer for Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 only. Switch 2 is not on that list.
  • Warzone’s full launch on Switch 2. Activision’s Switch 2 announcements cover Modern Warfare 4. The only Warzone play on Switch 2 so far was Resurgence during the beta.
