For most players, the Digital Standard Edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is the one to buy. At $69.99 it carries every digital pre-order bonus, including campaign and DMZ early access, while the $99.99 Vault Edition adds operator skins, five Signature Weapons, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ starter kit.
The Vault Edition makes sense if you already buy BlackCell or the Battle Pass every season, and it is cheapest as a pre-order with the 10% loyalty discount before October 23. Below is exactly what each edition includes, what the upgrade costs, the physical edition’s trade-offs and our pick for each kind of player.
Updated October 16, 2026: campaign early access went live at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) today, per Activision’s announcement, and it confirms both the Digital Standard and Vault Editions qualify on every platform. We replaced the expected unlock time with the confirmed one.
Every Modern Warfare 4 Edition at a Glance
Activision sells three editions, per its Modern Warfare 4 editions page:
- Digital Standard Edition, $69.99. The full game plus the digital pre-order bonuses. On PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.
- Vault Edition, $99.99. Digital only. The Standard Edition plus the Vault content below, on the same platforms.
- Physical Standard Edition, price set by the retailer. The full game on disc for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and a retail Standard Edition for Switch 2. No physical version exists for PC, and there is no physical Vault Edition.
The digital prices match on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Steam and Nintendo eShop. There is also a Vault Edition Upgrade for $30, which turns a Digital Standard Edition into a Vault Edition later. Since $69.99 plus $30 comes to $99.99, upgrading costs the same as buying the Vault Edition outright, minus the discount explained below.
What Every Digital Pre-Order Gets
These come with either digital edition, so you do not need the Vault Edition for any of them:
- Campaign early access, live since 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on Friday, October 16, when Activision announced it on every platform. Our campaign early access guide covers the platforms, the sixteen missions and the completion rewards.
- DMZ early access to all of DMZ from Tuesday, October 20.
- Hunter Killer Operator Skin, usable right away in Black Ops 7 and Warzone if you pre-order on Xbox, PlayStation or PC, and in Modern Warfare 4 at launch.
- Gilded Pearl Camo Pack: the Moonlit Pearl camo plus a Black Ops 7 challenge for the Gilded Ruin camo. Both carry into Modern Warfare 4 at launch.
- Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint, a five-attachment M4 build at launch. On Xbox Series X and S it has a translucent green Xbox 25th anniversary look. Everywhere else it has a mil-spec finish. Both versions perform the same.
The bonus items must be redeemed by October 23, 2027, and they stay on the platform you pre-ordered on.
What the Vault Edition Adds
On top of everything above, the Vault Edition includes:
- Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix, with masked and unmasked versions of Price and Valeria.
- Special Forces Operator Pack: four operators from France (COM SFT), Germany (KSK Amphibious), South Korea (South Korean Special Forces) and the UK (SAS), each with a voice pack in their own language.
- Signature Weapon Collection: five weapons with Blueprints, namely the Kastov 762 assault rifle, ISO Nightshade SMG, Rezi 12 shotgun, Oris 8.6 marksman rifle and a Combat Knife. The four guns come with attachments, including an Apex Attachment, unlocked at launch.
- BlackCell for one season: the full Battle Pass, 20 Tier Skips, 1,100 COD Points, plus an exclusive Operator and Weapon Blueprint.
- DMZ Deployment Bonus: one extra Active Duty Operator slot and a Deployment Kit with two each of Weapon Insurance Contracts, Operator Rescue Beacons, Fulton Drop Markers, Medium Backpacks and 2-Plate Carriers.
The operator packs and weapons also come to Warzone, starting with Season 1.
How the BlackCell season works. It starts with the Season 1 Battle Pass for pre-orders. Activision’s support page says that if you buy or upgrade after launch, BlackCell arrives at the start of the first new season after your purchase. Buy before October 23 if you want it to cover Season 1.
The Loyalty Discount and the Upgrade Catch
Activision takes 10% off the Vault Edition for returning players, which brings it to about $90. To qualify, you need to have owned and played one of these on the same platform account you pre-order with: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7. Claiming one of them through PlayStation Plus Monthly Games counts, and so does playing one through an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC Game Pass subscription, when you pre-order on Xbox.
The catches:
- It is for pre-orders only. The offer ends October 23.
- It does not apply to the upgrade. Buy the Standard Edition now and upgrade later, and you pay the full $30 with no discount.
- It is per platform. It only shows at checkout on a platform where you meet the requirement.
So if you are fairly sure you want the Vault Edition, buying it outright before launch is the only way to get it cheaper.
The Physical Edition: What You Give Up
A disc is the only way to resell or lend the game, but you lose a lot. Activision lists campaign early access, DMZ early access, the Hunter Killer skin, the camo pack and the Inner Circuit Blueprint under the digital editions, and describes the physical edition as “the full base game.” Physical copies cannot be upgraded to the Vault Edition either. Multiplayer and DMZ also need a continuous internet connection, so a disc does not make the game offline-proof.
Our Pick for Each Kind of Player
- Campaign players and casual multiplayer players: Digital Standard. You still get the full campaign a week early, and it is playable now.
- Players who buy the Battle Pass every season: Vault Edition, pre-ordered with the loyalty discount. BlackCell includes 1,100 COD Points, which is what the premium Battle Pass costs in Black Ops 7, so the season you get can pay for the next season’s pass.
- DMZ grinders: lean Vault. The extra Active Duty slot and the starter kit matter most early on, before you have built up a stash.
- Undecided: Digital Standard now. You can upgrade on the same platform for $30 any time, without losing anything except the discount.
- Collectors or anyone who resells games: physical, knowing you give up early access.
Whichever you pick, Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch, so a subscription is not a way around buying it. If you are coming over from last year’s game, our Black Ops 7 Prestige guide covers how Prestige works there (Modern Warfare 4 splits it into Classic and Regular paths), and our Modern Warfare 4 DMZ breakdown shows what the Vault’s DMZ kit plugs into.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition worth it? It is worth it if you would buy BlackCell or the Battle Pass in Season 1 anyway, especially with the 10% loyalty discount on a pre-order. If you mainly play the campaign, the Standard Edition has everything you need, including early access.
How much is the Vault Edition upgrade? $30, or the regional equivalent. You buy it on the same platform as your Digital Standard Edition, through that store or the in-game store. The loyalty discount does not apply to it.
Does the Standard Edition get campaign early access? Yes, the digital one does. Any digital pre-order gets campaign early access, live since 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) on October 16, and DMZ early access from October 20. The physical edition does not.
Can you upgrade a physical copy to the Vault Edition? No. Activision says physical editions cannot be upgraded. The Vault Edition is only sold digitally.
Is there a physical Vault Edition? No. The Vault Edition is digital only. The physical release is the Standard Edition, on Xbox Series X, PS5 and Switch 2.
Do Vault Edition items work in Warzone? Yes, from Season 1. Activision says the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator Packs and the Signature Weapon Collection come to Warzone with Season 1.
