Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4: How Prestige Works

Prestige in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 opens when you reach Level 55, the top of the player level track, and for the first time in the series you choose between two paths: Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress in exchange for a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics, while Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but keeps everything you have unlocked. There are ten Prestige Levels, and after the tenth comes Prestige Master, which runs all the way to Level 1,000.

Everything below comes from Activision’s progression and Prestige post, published on October 19 ahead of the October 23 launch, which our news story on the two Prestige paths also covered. Here is how leveling feeds into Prestige, what each path costs you, how the Permanent Unlock Token works, every Prestige reward Activision has named, how Prestige Master and Prestige icons work, and which path we would pick.

How Leveling Works Before You Prestige

Your first goal is to climb from Private I (Level 1) to Commander (Level 55). Each level gives you at least one unlock: weapons, Lethal and Tactical equipment, Field Upgrades, Perks and Killstreaks. XP comes from Multiplayer and DMZ at launch, and from Warzone once Season 1 arrives shortly after launch.

DMZ adds a wrinkle. It has its own separate 70-level track for DMZ unlocks, but Activision says XP you earn in DMZ also counts toward the main 1 to 55 track. It does not work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP never count toward your DMZ level. If you are playing DMZ early access before launch, those runs are already moving you toward Level 55. Our DMZ beginner guide explains how a DMZ run pays out.

When you finish Level 55, the game offers you Prestige and asks you to pick a track.

Classic vs Regular Prestige

Both paths put your level back to 1 and both lead to the same ten Prestige Levels. The difference is what you keep and what you get for giving it up.

Classic Prestige Regular Prestige
Player level Back to Level 1 Back to Level 1
Level unlocks (weapons, equipment, Perks, Killstreaks) Reset, earned again as you level Kept
Create-a-Class progress Reset Kept
XP boost 20% None
Permanent Unlock Token One None
Rewards The shared rewards plus bonus cosmetics The shared rewards

Activision says most Prestige rewards are shared by both paths, and the Classic track adds bonus rewards on top. You can see the difference at the end of each Prestige Level: the Level 50 reward comes in two versions, a standard one on the Regular track and a “Prime” or alternate version on the Classic track.

You are not locked in. Every time you finish a Prestige Level, you choose again between Classic and Regular for the next one. A player can go Classic for Prestige 1 and Regular for Prestige 2, or switch back and forth all the way to Prestige Master.

How the Permanent Unlock Token Works

Choosing the Classic track earns one Permanent Unlock Token. Spend it on any single item from your level unlocks and that item stays unlocked for the rest of your leveling journey, including every future Classic reset.

Activision’s own example: the Throwing Knife unlocks at Level 48. After a Classic Prestige you would normally have to climb back to Level 48 to use it again, but if you spend your token on it, it stays in your loadouts from Level 1 onward, even when you Prestige on the Classic track again later.

Spend it on gear, not guns. Activision recommends putting tokens into Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and Equipment rather than weapons. Any Weapon Blueprint you get from the Store or a seasonal Battle Pass permanently unlocks the base version of that weapon anyway, so a token spent on a gun can end up wasted.

Every Prestige Level and Its Rewards

Each Prestige Level is themed on a past Infinity Ward game, and each one pays out a new reward every ten levels, with the last at Level 50. Activision listed the full Prestige 1 track:

When Reward
Prestige 1, instantly “Sandstorm” Operator Skin for Army SF Airborne
Prestige 1, Level 10 “Call of Duty (2003)” Loading Screen
Prestige 1, Level 20 “Prestige 1” Emblem
Prestige 1, Level 30 “Engage!” Weapon Charm
Prestige 1, Level 40 “Men of Service” Large Decal
Prestige 1, Level 50 Mosin-Nagant Marksman Rifle Blueprint: “The Vet” (Regular) or “The Vet Prime” (Classic)

For Prestige 2 through 10, Activision named the game that inspires each level and its final Level 50 reward on both tracks:

Prestige Inspired by Final reward Regular track Classic track
2 Call of Duty 2 (2005) PPSh-41 SMG Blueprint “Calm Resolve” “Trench Fiend”
3 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) SAS Operator Skin “Watchtower” “Watchtower Prime”
4 Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Finn LMG Blueprint “Terminal” “Torn Up”
5 Modern Warfare 3 (2011) Army SF Airborne Operator Skin “Razor One” “Razor One Prime”
6 Ghosts (2013) Axion Assault Rifle Blueprint “Ghosts Legend” “Ghosts Legend Prime”
7 Infinite Warfare (2016) Army SF Airborne Operator Skin “Warfighter” “Warfighter Prime”
8 Modern Warfare (2019) M4 Assault Rifle Blueprint “141” “141 Prime”
9 Modern Warfare II (2022) Reece Operator Skin “Sable” “Sable Prime”
10 Modern Warfare 4 Sang 9mm Pistol Blueprint “Boksu” “Boksu Prime”

Activision has not listed the Level 10 to 40 rewards for Prestige 2 through 10 yet. Each Prestige Level shows its full track in the game under Career, then Progression, then Prestige, and the Loading Screen reward in each track names the game it is based on.

Prestige Master, Prestige Legend and Prestige Icons

After Prestige 10 you enter Prestige Master, and your level stops resetting. Instead it keeps climbing past 55, all the way to Level 1,000, where you become a Prestige Legend. Rewards arrive every five to ten levels up to Level 99, then every 25 levels after that. Activision listed the early ones:

  • On entering Prestige Master: the “Paragon” Operator Skin for Park, and the Orange Level Color.
  • Level 60: “Best of the Best” Loading Screen.
  • Level 65: “Prestige Master 56” Emblem.
  • Level 70: “Pinnacle” Weapon Charm.
  • Level 80: “Containment Breach” Weapon Sticker.
  • Level 90: “Master Renegade” Blueprint for the Han 86 Assault Rifle.

Level Colors are new customization for Prestige Master players: the color of your level as other players see it in-game. Orange unlocks at Level 56, Navy at Level 100, and more colors follow every 25 Prestige Master levels, including multi-color and animated options.

Prestige icons live in the Career menu under Profile, next to your Prestige Color, Emblem, Calling Card and Clan Tag. Activision notes that some of these Career menus stay locked until you are able to Prestige or are further into your career. From Prestige Master Level 100, and every 100 levels after that, you unlock sets of legacy Prestige icons from past Call of Duty games across the franchise, including the new Modern Warfare 4 Prestige icons. Equipping a legacy icon replaces your current Prestige Master icon. What Prestige Legend itself awards at Level 1,000, Activision lists only as “[CLASSIFIED].”

Weapon Prestige Is a Separate System

Weapons have their own optional Prestige, and it does not touch your player level. Once a weapon reaches its max level, you can enter Weapon Prestige:

  • What resets: that weapon’s level goes back to 1, and its Attachments relock, except Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint Attachments. Shared Attachments you unlocked stay unlocked on every other weapon.
  • What stays: Blueprints, Camos, Reticles, Accessories, Decals and Stickers.
  • What you earn: a Weapon Prestige icon in Gunsmith and on the Killcam, plus the evolving Pyroclast camo. Pyroclast unlocks at Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1 and Pyroclast Terminus at Weapon Prestige 1 max level.
  • Weapon Prestige Master: after the second climb to max level, the weapon moves into Weapon Prestige Master without another reset. Pyroclast Scatter unlocks at Weapon Prestige Master Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Level 250.

Which Prestige Path Should You Pick?

This part is our take, not Activision’s. Because you choose again at every Prestige Level, the decision is smaller than it looks.

  • Pick Regular if you like your loadouts. You keep every weapon, Perk and Killstreak, and most of the rewards are the same. It is the path for players who want Prestige icons and rewards without rebuilding their classes every few days.
  • Pick Classic if you are chasing Prestige Master. The 20% XP boost speeds up the climb, the Classic track adds the “Prime” and alternate versions of each final reward, and every Classic Prestige adds another Permanent Unlock Token, so each reset hurts a little less than the last.
  • A sensible mix: go Classic for the early Prestige Levels, when relocking gear costs you the least and each token unlocks something you use in every class, then switch to Regular if the resets start to wear on you.

Whichever you choose, time your Double XP Tokens carefully: in Modern Warfare 4 they only count down while you are in a match, as our Double XP token story explains. If you are coming from Black Ops 7, its reset-only system in our Black Ops 7 Prestige guide shows how different this is. Every Modern Warfare 4 guide we publish is collected on our Call of Duty hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the max level in Modern Warfare 4? Level 55 is the top of the regular player level track. After ten Prestige Levels, Prestige Master takes your level past 55 all the way to Level 1,000.

How many Prestige Levels are in Modern Warfare 4? Ten, followed by Prestige Master. Each Prestige Level is themed on a past Infinity Ward game, from Call of Duty (2003) at Prestige 1 to Modern Warfare 4 itself at Prestige 10.

Can you switch between Classic and Regular Prestige? Yes. Activision says you choose a track every time you enter a new Prestige Level, so you can switch as often as you like.

Does Regular Prestige give fewer rewards than Classic? Slightly. Most rewards are shared by both tracks, but Classic adds bonus rewards, such as the “Prime” versions of the final Blueprints and Operator Skins, plus a 20% XP boost and a Permanent Unlock Token.

Does DMZ XP count toward Prestige? Yes. Activision says XP earned in DMZ counts toward the main 1 to 55 level track that leads to Prestige. Multiplayer XP does not count toward your separate DMZ level, and DMZ Operator Prestige is its own system.

Does Prestiging reset your weapon camos? No. Player Prestige and Weapon Prestige are separate, and even Weapon Prestige keeps your Camos, Blueprints and other weapon customization.
