Double XP tokens in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will only count down while you are in a match, and tokens you already own will be usable in the new game, the official Call of Duty account announced on September 28, 2026. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23.
The Details
The announcement is short. The post reads: “More time to make your 2XP count. Tokens will count down in game time and your existing tokens will be usable starting in Modern Warfare 4.” The graphic attached to it spells it out: “Tokens now only count down in-match.”
That means two changes:
- In-match timers. An activated token’s clock runs only during gameplay, instead of draining while you sit in menus, lobbies or matchmaking.
- Your stockpile carries over. Tokens you have already collected will work in Modern Warfare 4.
What Activision has not said yet:
- Whether the change covers every token type (Double XP, Double Weapon XP and Battle Pass tokens) or only some.
- Whether Warzone gets the same rule, and whether it arrives at launch or with Season 1.
What This Means for Players
Wasted token time has been one of Call of Duty’s longest-running complaints: activate a 15-minute token, spend five minutes tweaking a loadout or waiting in a lobby, and a third of it is gone. Counting down only in matches makes every minute of a token count, and together with the carry-over it makes hoarded tokens worth saving for launch week.
It follows Warzone’s new toggle that hides other players’ crossover skins, another change tied to Modern Warfare 4’s arrival. When and Where
