No. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is a brand-new game, not a remake of 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It is a sequel that continues the rebooted Modern Warfare story that began with Modern Warfare (2019) and ran through Modern Warfare II (2022) and Modern Warfare III (2023), with a new campaign set during a North Korean invasion of South Korea.
The confusion is understandable: Call of Duty has reused the Modern Warfare name for two separate series, and “4” points straight back at the 2007 classic. Below is how the names fit together, how Modern Warfare 4 connects to the earlier games, what it borrows from the original, and where to find the actual remasters if that is what you wanted.
Why the Name Confuses People
There are two Modern Warfare series, and they share titles:
| Year | Game | Series |
|---|---|---|
| 2007 | Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare | Original trilogy |
| 2009 | Modern Warfare 2 | Original trilogy |
| 2011 | Modern Warfare 3 | Original trilogy |
| 2019 | Modern Warfare | Reboot |
| 2022 | Modern Warfare II | Reboot |
| 2023 | Modern Warfare III | Reboot |
| 2026 | Modern Warfare 4 | Reboot |
The original trilogy ended with Modern Warfare 3 in 2011 and never had a “Modern Warfare 4.” The “4” in 2007’s title is the fourth Call of Duty overall. In 2019, Infinity Ward rebooted the series with a new story and new versions of familiar characters, and the sequels that followed were numbered II and III. Modern Warfare 4 is the fourth game in that reboot, which is why two different games now answer to “Call of Duty 4.” Our count of every Call of Duty game lays out the whole timeline.
How Modern Warfare 4 Connects to the Reboot
Activision frames it as the next chapter, not a fresh start. Its Modern Warfare 4 reveal post says the game “pushes the series into darker and more dangerous territory, bringing long-running storylines to a powerful and emotional breaking point.”
What Activision has shown of the campaign:
- A new setting. North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of the South, which Activision calls “a new setting for the franchise.”
- A new lead. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time.
- A returning Captain Price. Price is described as an “operator-turned-outlaw” working outside the system he once served, on a personal hunt that collides with the forces behind the invasion.
- Locations around the world. Activision lists trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters fights in New York, chases through Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai and city-wide assaults to retake occupied territory.
Activision’s own Story So Far recap starts with Modern Warfare (2019) and walks through Modern Warfare II and III as the events leading up to Modern Warfare 4. It does not include the 2007 to 2011 trilogy, which confirms where the new game sits. Be warned that the recap spoils how Modern Warfare III ends.
Do You Need to Play the Earlier Games First?
No. In our view the campaign is built to work for newcomers: it opens with a new lead in a new war, and Activision’s recap covers what you need to know about Price. If you want the full context, the three reboot games in order are the ones that matter, not the 2007 trilogy.

What Modern Warfare 4 Borrows From the Original
It is new, but the past shows up in places, mostly in multiplayer:
- All-new launch maps. Activision describes all 12 Core multiplayer maps at launch as new.
- Shipment returns. The tiny container map that debuted in 2007’s Call of Duty 4 arrives as a 6v6 map on October 27, with what Activision calls its “classic layout and appearance.”
- Kill Block nods to classics. The new configurable training arena builds its sections from or around familiar locations, including Crash and Ambush from the 2007 game, plus Killhouse, Shoot House and Highrise.
Our Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer maps guide lists every map and when each one arrives. Beyond maps, the big modes are new or reworked, from the Collateral round-based mode to DMZ, which our DMZ beginner guide covers.
If You Wanted the Actual Remake
Two official remasters of the original trilogy exist, and neither is Modern Warfare 4:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (2016) rebuilt the 2007 game’s campaign and multiplayer, and first shipped with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s premium editions.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (2020) rebuilt the 2009 campaign. Activision still lists it among the games that qualify for Modern Warfare 4’s Loyalty Discount.
