Call of Duty: How Many Games There Are

There are 22 mainline Call of Duty games, from the original Call of Duty in 2003 to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 in November 2025, and Modern Warfare 4 becomes the 23rd when it launches on October 23, 2026. Add every spin-off, handheld version, old phone game and free-to-play release, and the series passes 50 games.

That gap is why answers online vary so much. Below is the counting rule we used, the full mainline list in order, and everything outside it.

How We Counted

Lists disagree because they count different things. Some treat Warzone as a mainline entry, some include remasters, and some fold the Nintendo DS versions into the console games that share their names. We picked one rule and stuck to it:

  • Mainline: the full-price Call of Duty releases for home consoles and PC, the entries Activision launches as the year’s new Call of Duty.
  • Spin-offs: separate console side games, handheld games and mobile games. A DS game that shares its name with a console release is still a different game, built by a different studio, so it goes here.
  • Free-to-play: standalone games you can download without buying anything, such as Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile.
  • Not counted: remasters (Modern Warfare Remastered in 2016 and Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered in 2020), expansions such as United Offensive, and compilations.

Under that rule, the totals through Black Ops 7 are 22 mainline games, 22 spin-offs and 6 free-to-play games, which makes 50. Count the two remasters as well and you get 52. Figures in between usually come from counting Warzone as mainline or skipping the old phone games.

Every Mainline Call of Duty Game in Order

  1. Call of Duty (2003, Infinity Ward)
  2. Call of Duty 2 (2005, Infinity Ward)
  3. Call of Duty 3 (2006, Treyarch)
  4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007, Infinity Ward)
  5. Call of Duty: World at War (2008, Treyarch)
  6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009, Infinity Ward)
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010, Treyarch)
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games)
  9. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012, Treyarch)
  10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013, Infinity Ward)
  11. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014, Sledgehammer Games)
  12. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2015, Treyarch)
  13. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016, Infinity Ward)
  14. Call of Duty: WWII (2017, Sledgehammer Games)
  15. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018, Treyarch)
  16. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019, Infinity Ward)
  17. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020, Treyarch and Raven Software)
  18. Call of Duty: Vanguard (2021, Sledgehammer Games)
  19. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022, Infinity Ward)
  20. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023, Sledgehammer Games)
  21. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (2024, Treyarch and Raven Software)
  22. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 (2025, Treyarch and Raven Software)

The repeated names trip people up: there are two games called Modern Warfare (2007’s Call of Duty 4 and the 2019 reboot), plus two Modern Warfare 2s and two Modern Warfare 3s, one of each in the original trilogy and one in the reboot.

Spin-Offs, Mobile Games and Warzone

The other 28 games split into four groups:

  • Console spin-offs (3): Call of Duty: Finest Hour (2004), Call of Duty 2: Big Red One (2005) and World at War Final Fronts (2008, PS2 only).
  • Handheld games (8): Call of Duty on N-Gage (2004), Roads to Victory on PSP (2007), the DS versions of Call of Duty 4 (2007), World at War (2008) and Black Ops (2010), Modern Warfare: Mobilized (2009) and Modern Warfare 3: Defiance (2011) on DS, and Black Ops: Declassified on PS Vita (2012).
  • Older mobile games (11): seven Java-era phone versions released between 2004 and 2010, a Windows Mobile edition of Call of Duty 2, the World at War Zombies and Black Ops Zombies apps, and Call of Duty: Strike Team (2013).
  • Free-to-play (6): Call of Duty Online (a China-only PC game), Call of Duty: Heroes (2014), Call of Duty: Mobile (2019), the original Warzone (2020), the current Warzone (2022) and Warzone Mobile (2024).

Call of Duty Online, Heroes and the original Warzone have since shut down, and Warzone Mobile is no longer updated, leaving Call of Duty: Mobile and the current Warzone.

Warzone blurs the line: it is free, but it shares progression with the current premium game, and Black Ops 7’s levels, Prestige and weapon progress have carried into it since Season 01. That link moves again soon, and our story on Warzone’s new Operator skin toggle covers what happens to older weapons and skins when Modern Warfare 4’s first season arrives.

Modern Warfare 4 Is Next

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, and will be the 23rd mainline game. Activision’s official page lists Xbox, Xbox PC, PlayStation, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo versions, and digital pre-orders unlock campaign early access on October 16. The Switch 2 version makes it the first mainline Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Ghosts reached the Wii U in 2013.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Black Ops games are there? Seven mainline games carry the Black Ops name: Black Ops, Black Ops II, Black Ops III, Black Ops 4, Black Ops Cold War, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. Some lists say eight because World at War (2008) sets up the same story. The DS version of Black Ops and Black Ops: Declassified on Vita are spin-offs.

How many Modern Warfare games are there? Six so far: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 in the original trilogy, then the 2019 Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III in the reboot. Modern Warfare 4 will be the seventh.

What was the first Call of Duty game? Call of Duty, a World War II shooter from Infinity Ward, released on PC on October 29, 2003.

Is Warzone its own game? Yes. Warzone is a free battle royale that needs no premium Call of Duty, though it shares progression with the current one. That is why we count it as free-to-play, not mainline.
