No, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 does not have a Zombies mode. Activision launches it on October 23, 2026 with three modes, Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, and DMZ is the co-op mode that takes the slot Zombies held in the last three Call of Duty games.
Zombies is not announced for any later season either, as of October 13. Below is what Activision has actually said, why this year is different, how DMZ compares if you mainly played Zombies with friends, and where to keep playing Zombies after Modern Warfare 4 launches.
What Activision Has Announced
Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 announcement breaks the game into exactly three parts, each with its own overview: the Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. Every official breakdown since then, from the editions page to the Steam and Nintendo eShop listings, describes the same three modes and nothing else. None of them mention Zombies, round-based or otherwise.
The only place Zombies appears in Modern Warfare 4 marketing is a pre-order bonus that runs in the previous game. The Gilded Pearl Camo Pack’s challenge asks you to earn 5,000 Skulls in Black Ops 7, and Zombies eliminations count toward it at 1 Skull each. That is Black Ops 7’s Zombies mode, not a new one.
There has also been no Zombies tease in the Season 1 plans. What Activision has said about Season 1 covers Warzone: the new Zodiac Resurgence map, a Battle Royale version of DMZ’s Hajin map, and Warzone switching over to Modern Warfare 4 content and progression.
Why There Is No Zombies This Year
Modern Warfare 4 is an Infinity Ward game, and Zombies is Treyarch’s signature mode. Infinity Ward has only made Zombies once, for 2016’s Infinite Warfare, and its Modern Warfare games have gone without it. The pattern across recent years:
- Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 (Treyarch): round-based Zombies at launch, with new maps added through their seasons.
- Modern Warfare III (2023, Sledgehammer Games): shipped Modern Warfare Zombies, an open-world take built with Treyarch.
- Modern Warfare II (2022, Infinity Ward): no Zombies. Its third mode was DMZ, which launched in Warzone 2.0 as a beta.
So the last time Infinity Ward led the series, it also went without Zombies, and its answer was DMZ. Modern Warfare 4 brings DMZ back as a full mode built into the game rather than a beta, which is the clearest sign of where Infinity Ward put the time other years spent on Zombies.
The Standalone Zombies Rumor
In February 2026 a leak went viral claiming Activision was preparing a separate Zombies game to sit alongside the yearly release. The official Call of Duty account answered it directly on February 23: “The rumor factory working overtime. This ain’t it.”
That reply was about a standalone Zombies release, not Modern Warfare 4 itself, but it is the only on-record comment Activision has made about Zombies this year. Nothing official since then has pointed to Zombies returning in 2026.
DMZ: What You Get Instead
If you played Zombies for the co-op, DMZ is the closest thing in Modern Warfare 4, with one big difference: other players are in the match with you.
- Squads or solo. You can deploy alone or with a squad, and Squad Fill drops you in with two other players if your friends are offline.
- AI enemies with escalation. North Korean troops, drone swarms, roaming Lieutenant bosses and Commanders such as the minigun-armed Colossus fill the map, and the harder you push, the harder Hajin pushes back.
- Rival squads. Other players deploy into the same match, so every run can turn into a firefight, a truce or a betrayal.
- Persistent progress. You keep a stash, a roster of Operators with their own Trait trees and a separate 1 to 70 progression track, and you lose your gear if you die before extracting.
- Story Missions. Replayable missions continue the campaign’s story inside Hajin.
There are no undead, Perk machines or wonder weapons. It is a military extraction shooter, closer to the DMZ of Modern Warfare II than to anything Treyarch makes. Our Modern Warfare 4 DMZ breakdown covers the base you build, the bosses and the leveling track, and digital pre-orders can play DMZ from Tuesday, October 20, three days before launch.
Where to Play Zombies Now
Black Ops 7 is still the Zombies game, and it is still getting content. Its Season 06 update, live since September 17, added:
- Tenshu, a new Survival map set in a besieged castle keep, with round milestone rewards at rounds 10, 25 and 50.
- Directed Mode for Rex Infernus, which Activision calls the final Round-Based Zombies map for Black Ops 7, with on-screen quest steps.
- A Rogue Run overhaul and a Super Easter Egg reward for players who have finished every Main Quest.
Black Ops 7 does not stop working when Modern Warfare 4 launches, so you can keep playing its Zombies maps alongside the new game. Our Black Ops 7 Prestige guide covers how its progression works if you are still leveling there, and if you are deciding whether Modern Warfare 4 is worth buying without Zombies, our Modern Warfare 4 edition guide breaks down what each version includes.
