No. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is not on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and there is no version, bundle or upgrade that puts it there. Activision said so in its reveal: the game launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and “it will not be available on PlayStation 4 or XBOX One.”
That makes Modern Warfare 4 the first yearly Call of Duty since those consoles launched in 2013 to leave them out. Below is exactly what Activision said, what still works on your old console, and what PS4 and Xbox One players can do if they want to play at launch.
What Activision Said About PS4 and Xbox One
Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 reveal post, published May 28, 2026, says it twice. Its platform section reads: “Modern Warfare 4 will launch on XBOX Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not be available on PlayStation 4 or XBOX One.”
The reason Activision gives is technical. The game is “built natively for current-generation consoles and PC, enabling greater scale, density, responsiveness, and consistency across every mode,” and that “current-generation focus goes beyond visual fidelity.”
The official Modern Warfare 4 editions page matches it. Digital pre-orders are listed for Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC app, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2, and physical editions are sold for Xbox Series X and PS5 only.
The Full Platform List

| PC | Yes | Xbox PC app, Battle.net and Steam; TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot required |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | Built natively with Digital Legends, same-day launch |
| PlayStation 4 | No | No version or upgrade path |
| Xbox One | No | No version or upgrade path |
| Original Nintendo Switch | No | Switch 2 only |
Can You Play It on PS4 or Xbox One Any Other Way?
Not through anything Activision offers:
- No cross-gen bundle. Activision’s editions page lists Standard and Vault editions for current platforms only. There is no PS4 or Xbox One edition, so there is nothing to upgrade from.
- No disc option. The physical editions are PS5 and Xbox Series X discs. A PS5 disc will not run on a PS4, and a Series X disc will not run on an Xbox One.
- No Game Pass at launch. Even on current Xbox hardware, Modern Warfare 4 is not on the service at launch, as our Modern Warfare 4 Game Pass guide explains.
What Happens to Warzone and Black Ops 7 on Your Old Console
Modern Warfare 4 skipping last-gen also changes the games you already have:
- Warzone stops working on PS4 and Xbox One. Activision says Warzone “on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1,” when it switches to Modern Warfare 4’s content and progression. Infinity Ward’s roadmap dates Season 1 for November 6. Our Warzone PS4 and Xbox One shutdown guide has the full timeline.
- Black Ops 7 keeps working. Activision’s Warzone platform update FAQ says other Call of Duty games originally released on PS4 and Xbox One will remain available to play.
- Your progress is not lost. Progression and items bought with COD Points follow your Activision account to current platforms. Unspent COD Points stay inside a console family: PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S.
What PS4 and Xbox One Players Can Do
If you want Modern Warfare 4 at launch, these are the options:
- Move up within your console family. PS4 players keep the most by moving to PS5, and Xbox One players by moving to Xbox Series X or S, because COD Point balances and most real-money items carry over on the same account.
- Use the Loyalty Discount before launch. Activision gives 10% off the digital Vault Edition until October 23 to players who own and have played a qualifying Call of Duty, from Modern Warfare (2019) through Black Ops 7. Its editions page says a qualifying game on a previous-generation console counts “when preordering on the next-generation console version within the same console family.”
- Play on PC. Check the TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and SSD requirements first in our Modern Warfare 4 PC specs story, and the storage you need in our Modern Warfare 4 download size guide.
- Play on Switch 2. It is the full Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ package, as our Switch 2 version guide explains.
Whatever you move to, crossplay lets you squad up with friends on the other current platforms, which our Modern Warfare 4 crossplay guide covers, and our edition guide explains whether the Vault Edition is worth it.
