Overwatch: How Support Sombra Works

Sombra surrounded by holographic screens in official Overwatch art from Blizzard

Sombra is now a Tactician Support: Hotfix heals one ally over time, Cyberspace drops a zone that heals allies and Weakens enemies (cutting their damage and healing by 40%), and Translocator’s stealth keeps her alive between plays. Hack is gone as a main ability, so instead of locking enemies out of their abilities you heal and Weaken, although Hotfix can still hack health packs and most deployables, and her EMP Ultimate still hacks everyone it hits.

Updated November 5, 2026: Blizzard’s November 3 patch cut Weaken from 50% to 40% and Hotfix from 12 seconds to 10, and made EMP override enemy effects on health packs, so the numbers below now match it. Our Taking Reign story covers the rest of the patch.

Blizzard calls the move from Damage to Support “one of the biggest changes we’ve ever made to an existing Hero,” and it went live with Season 5 of Overwatch on October 6, 2026. Every number below is verified against Blizzard’s Season 5 patch notes and its November 3 patch notes. Our Season 5 news story covers the rest of the season.

Why Blizzard Moved Sombra to Support

The developer comments explain it: her “identity as a disruptive mastermind was at odds with the value a Damage hero was expected to bring.” On Hack, Blizzard says that facing Sombra “often meant being unexpectedly locked out of your abilities,” which “most players found jarring, frustrating, and difficult to deal with.” Weaken is the replacement: a debuff that, at Season 5’s launch, “halves an enemy’s own damage and healing output” without taking their abilities away. Blizzard’s November 3 patch cut it from 50% to 40%.

What Changed: Old Sombra vs Support Sombra

Before Season 5 Season 5
Role and subrole Damage, Recon Support, Tactician
Secondary fire Hack Hotfix (heal an ally; can hack health packs and deployables)
Ability 1 Virus Cyberspace (healing and Weaken zone)
Passive Opportunist Conspirator: fully charged enemy Ultimates are revealed to you
Machine Pistol 8 damage per projectile 7 damage per projectile, longer falloff range, tighter spread
Translocator 5 seconds of stealth, 6-second cooldown 6.5 seconds of stealth, 7.5-second cooldown, shorter throw
EMP 25% of current health 20% of current health, 67.5% higher Ultimate cost

Blizzard also raised the experience she needs for her perks: 67% more for the minor perk and 69.5% more for the major one.

How Hotfix Works

Hotfix is your main heal, and its numbers reward planning:

  • It heals 65 health instantly, then 25 per second, until it has healed 175 in total or 10 seconds pass (12 before Blizzard’s November 3 patch).
  • It has 2 charges, an 8-second cooldown, a 17-meter range and a 0.5-second cast time.
  • You can use it while stealthed. It “temporarily reveals” you but does not break stealth.
  • Aimed at a health pack or most enemy deployables, it hacks them instead. That uses no Hotfix charge and triggers its own 6-second cooldown. Hacked health packs now last 30 seconds instead of 45, and taking damage interrupts the hack. Since the November 3 patch, Hanzo’s Sonic Disruption no longer overrides a health pack you have hacked.

Because the heal ticks over time, put Hotfix on teammates before they take a big hit, such as your tank as they walk into a fight, rather than on someone already at low health.

How Cyberspace and Weaken Work

Cyberspace is a projectile that explodes on impact:

  • The blast deals 40 damage to enemies and heals allies for 40.
  • The zone lasts 3 seconds with a 5-meter radius, dealing 25 damage per second to enemies and healing allies for 30 per second.
  • Enemies inside are Weakened, which cuts their own damage and healing output by 40% (50% before Blizzard’s November 3 patch).

Throw it where the fight is happening, so it catches enemies and allies in the same circle. Weaken on an enemy Support during a team fight cuts their healing by 40% at the moment it matters most.

Stealth, Translocator and Positioning

Translocator still throws a beacon you teleport to, and you become stealthed afterward. Season 5 made the stealth longer (6.5 seconds) but slower to kick in (0.75 seconds), cut the throw range from 18 to 12.25 meters, and moved the speed bonus so it starts right after you teleport.

The practical change is that you are no longer a flanker. A Support Sombra lives behind her tank, uses Translocator to escape dives and reposition, and uses stealth to reach allies safely. Her new perk options push her toward the team, too.

Perks and Passives

Level Perk What it does
Minor Life Hack EMP applies Hotfix to all nearby allies
Minor CTRL ALT ESC Teleporting with Translocator below half health starts passive health regeneration
Major Data Packet Hacking health packs with Hotfix reduces its main cooldown by 4 seconds
Major Cybersecurity Cyberspace’s healing is doubled on allies below half health

As a Tactician, Sombra also gets that subrole’s passive, which Blizzard’s subrole notes describe as keeping excess Ultimate charge after you use your Ultimate (with a 25% bonus cap). Her own new passive, Conspirator, reveals fully charged enemy Ultimates to you, which is valuable information to call out to your team.

How to Play Support Sombra Without Feeding

  • Pre-heal with Hotfix. It heals over time, so get it out early.
  • Weaken the enemy healer. One good Cyberspace can decide a fight.
  • Hack health packs between fights. Data Packet turns this into faster Hotfix cooldowns.
  • Save Translocator for escapes. It is your only real defense now that you are on the back line.
  • Pair EMP with your team’s engage. With Life Hack it heals your whole team while it hacks theirs, and since the November 3 patch it also overrides enemy effects on health packs.

Sombra is not the only Support getting attention this season: our Doctrine guide covers the new hero, and if you are taking either into ranked on a new account, here is how to unlock Competitive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Sombra still hack enemies? Not with a dedicated button. Hack was removed, but Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables, and EMP still hacks every enemy it hits.

Is Sombra a Damage hero in Open Queue? No. She moved to the Support role in Season 5, so in Role Queue you queue as Support to play her.

Does Hotfix break stealth? No. Blizzard’s notes say Hotfix can be used while stealthed and only temporarily reveals Sombra.

What does Weaken do? It reduces an enemy’s own damage and healing output by 40%, down from 50% before Blizzard’s November 3 patch. Enemies caught inside Cyberspace’s zone are Weakened.

What happened to Virus and Opportunist? Both were removed in Season 5. Cyberspace replaced Virus, and Conspirator replaced Opportunist.
