Overwatch: How to Play Doctrine

Doctrine, Overwatch's vampire-themed Support hero, standing with his bat-like drones in Blizzard's official art

To play Doctrine well, stay at mid range healing and poking with Eternal Scepter, save Infuse for whichever ability the fight needs most, and hold Deliverance for the moment both teams commit, when its Overhealth for your team and its cap on enemy maximum health decide the trade. He is a Survivor-subrole Support, so his movement ability doubles as his self-heal, and staying alive is a big part of his value.

Updated November 5, 2026: Blizzard’s November 3 patch raised Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown to 10 seconds and Infuse’s to 9, and cut Infused Eternal Scepter’s damage and healing, so the numbers below now match it. Our Taking Reign story covers the rest of the patch.

Doctrine joined Overwatch when Season 5 began on October 6, 2026, as the game’s 54th hero. Blizzard calls him “a cyberneticist turned supervillain” whose kit is “built around manipulating the lifeforce on both sides of a fight.” Every number below is verified against Blizzard’s Season 5 patch notes, its November 3 patch notes and his official hero page, unless we say it comes from elsewhere. For the rest of the season’s changes, including Sombra’s move to Support, see our Season 5 news story.

Doctrine’s Kit at a Glance

Ability What it does Infused version
Eternal Scepter (weapon) Mid-range weapon that heals allies and damages enemies Fires a larger piercing blast
Infuse Adds a powerful effect to your next ability
Invigorating Drones Deploys drones to an ally, granting attack speed and healing Also deploys drones to yourself
Shrouded Momentum A horizontal rush with damage reduction Grants free-flight
Deliverance (Ultimate) A drone swarm that reduces enemy maximum health and gives allies Overhealth

Passive (Survivor subrole): Blizzard’s subrole rules say “using a movement ability activates passive health regeneration.” For Doctrine, that movement ability is Shrouded Momentum.

Blizzard’s Season 5 notes trimmed him after his BlizzCon trial weekend, where he was “overperforming relative to other supports,” and its November 3 patch trimmed him again. The live values now are:

  • Invigorating Drones: 30% attack speed (down from 35%).
  • Shrouded Momentum: 10-second cooldown (7 at the trial weekend, 8 in Season 5, 10 since November 3), 40% damage reduction (down from 50%), and it “no longer provides critical hit immunity while active.”
  • Deliverance: costs 8% more charge, its drones fire faster (5 instead of 4), and the Overhealth and enemy debuff last 6 seconds instead of 8, with a 4-second decay instead of 5.
  • Eternal Scepter (November 3): primary fire recovery up from 0.6 to 0.65 seconds, and the Infused shot’s damage cut from 90 to 80 and its healing from 120 to 110.
  • Infuse (November 3): cooldown up from 8 to 9 seconds.

If you watched trial-weekend videos, he is a little weaker in every one of those spots now.

How to Use Infuse

Infuse is the decision that separates a good Doctrine from an average one, because it upgrades whatever you press next. Since Blizzard’s November 3 patch it is on a 9-second cooldown, up from 8, so spend each Infuse with a plan rather than on whatever comes up first.

  • Infused Eternal Scepter fires a bigger piercing blast. Use it when enemies stack in a corridor or when an ally needs a large heal right now. With the Sanguine Siphon perk it also heals you.
  • Infused Invigorating Drones put drones on you as well as your target. This is your answer to a dive: you heal yourself while the ally you are pocketing hits harder.
  • Infused Shrouded Momentum gives free-flight instead of a flat rush. Use it to reach high ground, escape a flank, or reposition over a choke instead of through it.

The common mistake is spending Infuse on whatever comes up first in a fight. Before the fight starts, decide which one you are saving it for.

When to Use Deliverance

Deliverance hits both sides at once: allies in the swarm gain Overhealth, and enemies have their maximum health limited. Blizzard’s announcement says it lets you “redistribute” life when “there’s simply too much life on one side of the battlefield.”

That makes it a fight-starter or a fight-turner, not a panic button:

  • Pair it with your team’s engage. If your tank is diving in or your Damage players are about to commit, Deliverance makes enemies easier to kill and your team harder to kill in the same window.
  • Use it against enemy healing Ultimates. Capping maximum health limits how far healing can carry an enemy back up.
  • Mind the shorter window. After the Season 5 changes, the effect lasts 6 seconds, so firing it before your team is in position wastes most of it.

Which Perks to Take

Level Perk What it does
Minor (Level 2) Saving Grace Invigorating Drones heal for 40 health when applied
Minor (Level 2) Sanguine Siphon Heal for 50% of damage dealt with Infused Eternal Scepter
Major (Level 3) Transfusion Damage and healing dealt reduce Infuse’s cooldown
Major (Level 3) Cost of Life Sacrifice 25 maximum health; Eternal Scepter healing is increased by 20%

On paper:

  • Saving Grace suits a team that needs burst healing on one target, such as a dive tank. Sanguine Siphon suits a Doctrine who is getting pressured and uses the Infused Scepter often.
  • Transfusion means more Infuses per fight, but Blizzard halved its conversion rate for launch, so it pays off less than it did in the trial. Cost of Life is the pure-healing pick, at the price of making you easier to burst.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Shrouded Momentum no longer stops crits. It still cuts damage, but a sniper can headshot you mid-rush.
  • Your self-heal starts when you move. Because of the Survivor passive, using Shrouded Momentum early in a bad trade starts your regeneration sooner.
  • Stay mid range. The Scepter is built for it, and getting too close throws away your main advantage over most enemy Damage heroes.
  • Try him risk-free. Blizzard’s patch notes made Doctrine playable in Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, the Halloween mode that ran October 6 to November 2. With it over, Quick Play is the low-stakes place to learn him.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to unlock Doctrine? No. He joined the roster for every player when Season 5 began on October 6, 2026. His Hero Trial ran during BlizzCon, through September 14. A new account still has to unlock Competitive before playing him in ranked.

What subrole is Doctrine? Survivor. That subrole’s passive starts health regeneration when you use a movement ability.

Does Infuse work on Deliverance? Blizzard’s hero page only lists Infused versions of Eternal Scepter, Invigorating Drones and Shrouded Momentum. Deliverance has no Infused version.

Was Doctrine nerfed? Yes, twice. Blizzard’s Season 5 notes cut his attack speed buff, Shrouded Momentum’s damage reduction, Transfusion’s conversion and Deliverance’s duration, and raised his Ultimate cost. Its November 3 patch then raised Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown to 10 seconds and Infuse’s to 9, and cut Infused Eternal Scepter’s damage from 90 to 80 and its healing from 120 to 110.

Who is Doctrine? Tamuka Yeukai, a cyberneticist and old ally of Doomfist who was imprisoned in Watchpoint: Grímsvötn until Doomfist broke him out, according to his official hero page.
