It Takes Two tops our all-time list of the best co-op games on PS5, with Sackboy: A Big Adventure, A Way Out, Split Fiction and Baldur’s Gate 3 close behind. The newest addition is Minecraft Dungeons II, which launched on September 29, 2026 with four-player couch and online co-op. Every entry below says whether it plays on one couch, online or both, how many players it supports, and whether it has crossplay, checked against the PlayStation Store listing or the publisher. This is our evergreen ranking; for the newest releases, see our separate list of the best PS5 co-op games of 2026.
For couch co-op you will need a second controller; our guide to pairing a PS5 controller covers that.

1. It Takes Two
It Takes Two is a Hazelight platform adventure built purely for two: one player is Cody, the other May, a couple working through their relationship. Nearly every chapter hands the pair a new set of linked abilities, so the game keeps reinventing itself. It plays in couch co-op or online, and its Friend’s Pass means only one of you needs to buy it.

2. Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the best pick here for mixed ages and skill levels. Its store listing supports one to four players locally and up to four online for the whole campaign, and some levels are co-op only.

3. A Way Out
A Way Out is Hazelight’s 2018 prison-break drama, and like the studio’s later games it must be played by two people, each controlling one of the inmates, Leo or Vincent. The screen stays split for almost the entire story, often with each player doing something completely different. It is a PS4 game that runs on PS5 through backward compatibility, and the owner can invite a friend online who does not own it.

4. Split Fiction
Split Fiction is Hazelight’s March 2025 follow-up to It Takes Two, published by EA (the 2025 version of this list called it an indie darling, which it is not). Two writers, Mio and Zoe, are trapped inside their own stories, and the game jumps between sci-fi and fantasy worlds with new abilities in each. It is a split-screen game for exactly two players, locally or online, and its Friend’s Pass lets a partner join free and cross-platform.

5. Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 lets up to four players share one Dungeons and Dragons campaign online, or two on the same PS5 in split-screen, per its store listing. Each player can wander off and make choices the rest of the party has to live with. Larian’s Patch 8 in April 2025 added full crossplay with PC and Xbox, and the game won Best Community Support at The Game Awards 2025.

6. Diablo IV
Diablo IV supports two players on one console and up to four online, with crossplay and cross-progression on every platform, per the PlayStation Store. The campaign works with friends, but the real draw is the seasonal endgame. It needs an online connection even solo. Our guides cover what is new in Season 15 and when Season 15 ends.

7. Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 is a four-player online shooter where squads drop onto hostile planets to complete objectives and extract. Friendly fire is always on, so a stray airstrike can wipe your own team. Arrowhead still patches it regularly, and it reached Xbox Series X|S in August 2025. For the current meta, see our best loadouts after Patch 7.1.0 and our guide to beating Evacuate High-Value Assets.

8. Overcooked! All You Can Eat
Overcooked! All You Can Eat bundles Overcooked 1, Overcooked 2 and their extra content into one remastered package. It supports one to four players on a couch or up to four online, and Team17 added cross-platform online play for every level. An Assist Mode helps younger or newer players keep up.

9. Fortnite
Fortnite is free to play and still one of the easiest ways to get a group online together, with crossplay across consoles and PC. Battle royale can be played in teams (including Zero Build, which removes building), and player-made islands add co-op modes of their own. Our Fortnite guide covers how to beat Geno.

10. Minecraft Dungeons II
Minecraft Dungeons II is Mojang’s dungeon-crawler sequel, and it arrived on PS5 on September 29, 2026. Up to four players can team up on one console, online, or in a mix of both, which Mojang says is new to the series, and online play is cross-platform with PC, Xbox and Switch. The PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play. The first game’s mission map is gone, replaced by one connected world, and reviewers report that loot drops separately for each player, so friends at different levels can still play together. Our Minecraft Dungeons II co-op guide explains the online and offline hero choice you need to get right at the start.

11. The Quarry
The Quarry is Supermassive’s summer-camp horror story, where choices decide which of nine counselors survive the night. Its couch co-op mode assigns each player a counselor and passes the controller, and the PS Store lists one to eight players locally. Online, up to seven friends can watch along and vote on key decisions, but only on the same console generation.

12. Remnant 2
Remnant 2 is a third-person shooter with Soulslike difficulty and procedurally generated worlds, so no two playthroughs are laid out the same. It supports up to three players online (there is no couch co-op). Gunfire Games added crossplay in February 2024, and it is on by default for console players.

13. Minecraft
Minecraft got a native PS5 version in October 2024. It supports up to four players in split-screen and up to eight online, with crossplay across console, mobile and PC, and Realms Plus raises that to ten friends on a private server. Split-screen switches off the Vibrant Visuals graphics mode, per the store. Our look at Minecraft 26.4 covers what is coming next.

14. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake rebuilds the 2013 fairy tale for PS5. Solo, one player steers both brothers at once, one per stick. The remake adds local co-op where each player controls one brother. It is couch only, with no online play.

15. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is Gearbox’s fantasy spin-off of Borderlands, run like a tabletop campaign with Tiny Tina as the game master. Up to four players can loot together online or in local split-screen, and SHiFT crossplay connects PlayStation, Xbox and PC. If it clicks, Borderlands 4 carries the same co-op into a new game, with two-player split-screen and four-player online; our Borderlands 4 guides cover it.

16. Moving Out and Moving Out 2
Moving Out turns furniture removal into a physics party game: carry sofas, fridges and TVs to the van before the clock runs out, or throw them through a window. The original is a PS4 game for one to four players on one couch that runs on PS5 through backward compatibility. Groups who want to play online should pick Moving Out 2 instead, which adds four-player online play with crossplay.

17. Call of Duty: Warzone
Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale where squads drop into large lobbies and play for the win. Its co-op is about calling targets and reviving teammates. The 2025 version of this list mentioned DMZ, a mode that is not part of Warzone today. For a recent change, see our news on the toggle that hides other players’ crossover skins.

18. Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is NetEase’s free-to-play 6v6 hero shooter. Like the next few entries, it is team play against other players rather than co-op. Team-Ups give paired heroes bonus abilities on the same side. Our guides explain how Team-Ups work now and whether ranked is cross-platform, and the Marvel Rivals hub has the rest.

19. Overwatch
Overwatch is the game this list called Overwatch 2 in 2025; Blizzard’s site and the PS Store now use the plain name. It is free to play, online only, and built on 5v5 matches where tanks, damage heroes and supports need each other to win.

20. Apex Legends
Apex Legends is Respawn’s free-to-play battle royale, built around squads of Legends with distinct abilities. Its ping system lets teammates mark enemies, loot and destinations without voice chat, which makes it one of the friendliest shooters to play with strangers.

21. Human: Fall Flat
Human: Fall Flat is a physics puzzler where you control a wobbly, floppy character who has to climb, grab and carry objects through dreamlike levels. It supports two players on one PS5 and up to eight online, per its store listing.

22. Operation: Tango
Operation: Tango is a two-player spy game where one person is the field Agent and the other is the Hacker, and neither can see what the other sees. It is online co-op only and needs a microphone, so it is not a couch game (the 2025 text had this wrong). A Friend Pass lets a friend play free with the owner, and crossplay is enabled, per the store listing.

23. We Were Here Forever
We Were Here Forever replaces We Were Here Together, which the PlayStation Store now lists as not available for purchase. It is the fourth game in the series and the only one with a native PS5 version: two players are split up across Castle Rock and must describe what they see to solve asymmetric puzzles. It is online co-op only, both players need a microphone, and the developer says it supports cross-platform play.

24. Escape Academy
Escape Academy is a string of escape rooms wrapped in a story about a school for escape artists. It supports two players in local split-screen or online, and each room runs on a timer, so splitting up clues matters.

25. Cult of the Lamb
Cult of the Lamb mixes a roguelite dungeon crawler with a base where you manage your followers. The free Unholy Alliance update in August 2024 added two-player co-op, with the second player as the Goat, for the entire campaign. Co-op is local only; the store listing has no online play. Its larger paid expansion, Woolhaven, followed in January 2026.
How We Ranked These Games
Updated September 29, 2026: Minecraft Dungeons II joins the list at number 10 on its launch day, replacing Back 4 Blood, which has not had new content since its December 2022 expansion.
Games built only for co-op rank highest, which is why the three Hazelight games and Sackboy lead. Next come big games where co-op covers the full campaign, then party games, and finally the team shooters, which are team play against other people rather than co-op. For newer releases, see our best PS5 games of 2026, and if part of your group is on another system, our lists of the best PC co-op games of 2026 and the best Switch 2 co-op games of 2026 cover those platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best couch co-op game on PS5? It Takes Two is our pick. For three or four players on one couch, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons II are the strongest options.
Which PS5 co-op games only need one copy? It Takes Two and Split Fiction both have a Friend’s Pass, A Way Out lets the owner invite a friend who does not own it, and Operation: Tango has a Friend Pass.
Do I need PS Plus to play co-op on PS5? Not for couch co-op. Online play in paid games requires PS Plus, but the free-to-play games here (Fortnite, Warzone, Apex Legends and Overwatch) do not list that requirement on the PlayStation Store.
Which of these games have crossplay? Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo IV, Split Fiction, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Remnant 2, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons II, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, Moving Out 2, Operation: Tango and We Were Here Forever all support crossplay, as do the free-to-play shooters.
Why is We Were Here Together no longer on the list? The PlayStation Store now shows it as not available for purchase, so new players cannot buy it on PS5. We Were Here Forever, from the same developer, takes its place.
