The Blood of Dawnwalker’s 30-day time limit was originally “quite” a lot stricter and was loosened before launch, game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz told Eurogamer in an interview published September 24, 2026. Rebel Wolves rebalanced the main game in response to worried reactions after the reveal, but deliberately kept the prologue at the original, tighter setting.
What the Director Said
Eurogamer put it to Tomaszkiewicz that the full game felt far more generous than the prologue, where time is scarce and quests have to be chosen carefully. His answer was blunt: “Obviously. Yes. We had at first a more restricted time where it was harder to beat the game, but after all of those voices, before release even, we knew that it can be a problem and we rebalanced it this way to give the buffer for the people to not fear this.”
On the prologue, he said it “was the first small test-field for time,” and that the studio “didn’t change it because we wanted to give this experience for people and show them what they can expect.” The main game was changed later because the team “were afraid that people will complain too much that it’s too restricted.”
Asked how much stricter the first version of The Blood of Dawnwalker was, he said players “needed to think about everything even more carefully,” but that after talks with creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz the team decided “we don’t want to create a mini-game from it.” The goal of the main story, he said, is emotion, “not to create a challenge for it.”
Why Skills Cost Time
The interview also explains one of the more questioned design choices: upgrading skills at a shrine can spend time segments. According to Tomaszkiewicz, without that cost players farmed boars, wolves and other enemies for skill points, then went “on the first day, to kill Brencis,” the main antagonist, skipping the story entirely.
What This Means for Players
Nothing changes in your game: this is the design history of the build you already have. It does explain why the prologue feels so much tighter than everything after it, so if the opening made you nervous, the rest of the campaign gives you far more room. Our guide to how the 30-day time limit works breaks down the 16 daily segments and what actually spends them, and all endings and what happens after day 30 covers the consequences of running out.
The skill cost is worth planning around, since there is still no way to respec. Our best perks to take first helps you spend segments on upgrades that matter. The same director has already outlined the first big patch and its easier difficulty, expected in early October. Everything else is on our Dawnwalker hub, and our review has our full verdict on the time system.
