Bodycam famously has no HUD ammo counter, and for over two years there was genuinely no way to know what was left in your magazine. That changed with the v0.8 update: the game officially added inspect and magazine check animations across all weapons, alongside a new stressed animation layer. Here’s how ammo awareness works in the most HUD-less shooter on Steam.
Updated October 1, 2026: added patch #6’s fix that makes the rounds display consistently during mag checks, and clarified the keybind situation after patch #4’s input rework.
The Design: No Counter, On Purpose
Bodycam’s entire identity is the unfiltered bodycam feed: no crosshair overlay, no minimap, no ammo number in the corner. You know what an actual camera would show. That’s why “how to check ammo” is a real question here and not a joke: at Early Access launch in 2024, the honest answer was count your shots or reload blind.
The v0.8 Magazine Check
The “Locked and Loaded” update added proper magazine check animations for every weapon: your operator physically pulls and eyeballs the mag, the way real handling would. Use it behind cover between engagements, the way the technique works in reality.
The rounds you see are the read. Patch #6 (September 25) “improved bullet visibility logic so ammunition displays more consistently during mag checks, reloads, firing, and similar weapon states,” and fixed several weapon-state issues around ammo visibility, reloads, swaps and dropped weapons. If an earlier mag check showed you a magazine that did not match what you had fired, that was a bug, and it should now be fixed.
Finding the Keybind
Reissad Studio’s patch notes never name a default key for the magazine check, and player reports disagreed even before the input rework, so we are not listing one. Set it yourself:
- Open Settings and go to the key bindings menu.
- Find the inspect and magazine check binding for your setup, and bind it to a key you can reach without letting go of movement.
- If a bind you changed before mid-September stopped working, rebind it. Patch #4 (September 11) reworked keybinding conflict handling, “cleared outdated saved keybinding data,” and warned that “some modified keys may need to be rebound.”
The Stress System Twist
The magazine check ships alongside v0.8’s stressed animation layer, added, in the studio’s words, “so weapon handling reacts to combat intensity.” The notes don’t spell out exactly how stress changes a mag check, so treat a calm check behind cover as your clean read and assume a rattled, mid-fight check costs you more. It’s the most Bodycam feature imaginable: even the ammo readout is diegetic.
Practical Ammo Discipline
- Reload on your schedule, not the game’s: tactical reloads behind cover beat emergency reloads in doorways, and since partial mags are what real handling gives you, manage them like a real shooter would.
- Mag-check after every fight as a habit; walking into the next room on three rounds is how Bodycam rounds end.
- Count in short fights: the animations cost time; in a 15-second engagement, your memory is still the fastest counter.
- Test all of it in the HUB’s firing range, which is what it’s for (see our progression guide for what else the HUB offers).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the default key to check ammo in Bodycam? The official patch notes don’t name one, and the input system was reworked in patch #4, so check Settings, key bindings, for the inspect and magazine check bind on your setup and rebind it if needed.
Does checking ammo make noise or expose me? It occupies your hands and attention like any manipulation; treat it as an action with a cost, done in safety.
Can I see reserve ammo? The same diegetic rules apply; your loadout discipline is the reserve counter.
Did older advice say there was no way to check? It was right at the time; the feature is new to v0.8, so answers from 2024 are out of date. The same update also benched Zombies for now; our Zombies return guide covers when it comes back.
Does stress affect anything else? The stressed animation layer touches weapon handling broadly; its effect on manipulations like the mag check is the most visible ammo-related bite.
