Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered does not have online co-op at launch. Multiplayer is offline only: two players on one system in split screen, across Musou Mode, Free Mode and VS Mode. Koei Tecmo has confirmed that online two-player co-op is coming in a free post-launch update, but it has not given a date.
That is the state of play on every platform as of the game’s October 1, 2026 launch. Below is exactly what DYNASTY WARRIORS 3: Complete Edition Remastered supports today, what the online update is expected to add, and how to set up couch co-op.
What Multiplayer the Game Has Right Now
Koei Tecmo’s launch announcement describes “the return of the acclaimed offline 2-player mode from the original title, giving players the ability to team up or go head-to-head with split-screen gameplay, undertaking challenging battles in ‘Musou Mode’, ‘Free Mode’, and ‘VS Mode’.”
The store listings agree:
- Steam lists Shared/Split Screen Co-op and Shared/Split Screen PvP, with no online co-op tag.
- PlayStation Store lists offline play for one or two players.
- Nintendo eShop lists one to two players on a single system.
- Xbox Store lists local co-op and shared/split screen.
So both players need to be on the same console or PC, with two controllers.
The Online Co-op Update
Koei Tecmo announced online co-op at its Tokyo Game Show 2026 stage for the game. Its official account posted on September 24, 2026: “feel the power of our post-launch update, which will introduce two-player online co-op. The timing and further details will be announced later.” The October 1 launch press release repeated that the update is coming and that “full details and timing” will be revealed “in due course.”
What is known and what is not:
- Confirmed: online two-player co-op, as a post-launch update.
- Reported: Nintendo Life described the update as free and “reportedly scheduled for January 2027.” Koei Tecmo’s English-language posts have not confirmed a month, so treat that as a target, not a date.
- Not announced: crossplay between platforms, online VS Mode, or whether online play needs a paid subscription (PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online or similar) for console players.
We will update this guide when Koei Tecmo announces the timing.
Which Modes Support Two Players
| Mode | Two players? | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Musou Mode | Yes, co-op | Each officer’s story, battle by battle |
| Free Mode | Yes, co-op | Any officer on any unlocked stage and side |
| VS Mode | Yes, versus | Eight head-to-head stages with their own rules |
| Challenge Mode | Not listed for two players | Score attack: Endurance, Time Attack, Assault and more |
VS Mode includes stages like “Three Duels at Hulao Pass,” a 3v3 where the first player to fall loses, and “Naval Annihilation at Chibi,” a 1v1 race to defeat 20 enemy soldiers, per Koei Tecmo’s official site.
How to Play Couch Co-op
- Connect a second controller to the same console or PC before you start a battle.
- Choose Musou Mode, Free Mode or VS Mode from the main menu. These are the three modes Koei Tecmo lists for two players.
- Follow the two-player prompt so the second player can pick an officer, then head into battle.
- The screen splits into a top and bottom view, as Koei Tecmo’s official two-player screenshots show.
Bonus officers without a story of their own, such as Ziluan, can still join as the second player in Musou Mode, according to early player guides. That makes co-op a good way to use them outside Free Mode.
Couch Co-op Tips
- Use the second player to farm unlocks. A long-standing Dynasty Warriors 3 trick is to bring a maxed-out officer as player two to trigger events and earn fourth weapons for a weaker officer. Original-game guides note it works for most weapons.
- Mind the camera. Steam forum players report one stage, Yi Ling on the Wu side, where player two starts facing away from the battlefield.
- Remote Play is not listed. Steam does not list Remote Play Together, so playing online through Steam’s streaming is not an advertised feature.
