What Happened to the Original Switch Version
When Koei Tecmo announced the remaster in September 2025, the press release listed both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with a March 19, 2026 launch date. That date slipped, and in June 2026 Koei Tecmo announced the October 1, 2026 date and a platform change. The official site’s notice now lists only “PlayStation 5 / Nintendo Switch 2 / XBOX Series X|S / Steam.”
Nintendo Life reported Koei Tecmo’s explanation at the time: as development of the Switch version progressed, the team found it difficult to deliver the level of quality it wanted on the original hardware. The game is built in Unreal Engine 5, which explains the gap.
If you own a first Switch, there is no version for you; the Switch 2 is the only Nintendo option.
How the Switch 2 Version Runs
Koei Tecmo has not published resolution or frame rate targets for Switch 2. Early reviews are positive: Cubed3’s Switch 2 review describes the Unreal Engine recreation as running very well on the hardware. Offline two-player split screen works on Switch 2 like everywhere else, and the eShop lists one to two players on a single system, with save data cloud backup for Nintendo Switch Online members.
Is There a Physical Copy?
It depends on where you live:
- Japan: Koei Tecmo’s Japanese site lists boxed editions for PS5 and Switch 2, with the Switch 2 version sold as a Game-Key Card (the cartridge holds a key, and the game downloads).
- North America and Europe: Koei Tecmo America’s announcements only covered digital pre-orders, the “digital standard edition” and the Digital Deluxe Edition. The US Nintendo eShop page mentions no physical version.
- Asia: Korean distributor Gamepia released physical PS5 (Hong Kong version) and Switch 2 copies, according to Inven Global. Import retailers also list Asian PS5 copies as multi-language releases.
So a physical copy is possible as an import, but a Western retail release has not been announced by Koei Tecmo. Check the language options on any import before buying; PlayStation’s Asian store listing includes English alongside Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
PC Requirements
Per the Steam store page, the minimum is an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 5600 XT, targeting 1080p at 30 fps on Low with upscaling. The recommended spec (RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT, i7-10700K or Ryzen 7 3700X) targets 1080p at 60 fps on High. Steam lists Windows 11, though players on the Steam forums report running it on Windows 10.
