EA FC 27: How to Defend After the AI Defending Changes

EA Sports FC 27 official screenshot

Defending in EA FC 27 is mostly manual: in competitive modes your AI teammates no longer tackle a dribbler who gets close, so you win the ball by switching to the right defender yourself, jockeying, and timing the tackle. EA compensated by making manual defending stronger, with faster jockey speed and a longer standing tackle reach than in FC 26, while AI teammates now hold position and cut off space.

Below we explain exactly what EA changed, the controls you will use most, a step-by-step way to defend a dribbler, the tactics settings that help, and the mistakes that get punished this year. Changes are verified against EA’s Gameplay Deep Dive and Closed Beta Feedback Update for EA SPORTS FC 27.

What EA Changed About Defending

Per EA, these AI changes apply to Competitive gameplay, the setting used online in Ultimate Team, Clubs and Online Seasons. Authentic gameplay in Career Mode and Kick-Off behaves differently.

  • No more auto-tackles. AI-controlled defenders used to try to win the ball automatically when a dribbler came close. Now they “rely more on their positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to make a tackle.” They can still pick up a loose ball or win it when a dribbler runs straight into them.
  • Shorter AI interception reach. A defender you control reaches further than an AI one, so switching to the defender in the passing lane matters.
  • Stronger manual defending. Manually controlled defenders jockey faster than in FC 26, and manual standing tackles have more range.
  • Teammate Contain is looser. An AI teammate on contain now marks the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance, so it slows an attack rather than stealing the ball.
  • Team Press does nothing in your defensive third. It still works higher up, but defenders who step toward their marks there press less effectively and leave space in behind.
  • Lower Defensive Depth is honoured. EA adjusted lines so low depth settings retreat sooner and leave less space in behind.

The Controls You Will Use Most

These are the default controller inputs; if you have customised your layout, check Pause > Settings > Basic Controls.

Action PlayStation Xbox
Jockey Hold L2 Hold LT
Sprint Jockey Hold L2 + R2 Hold LT + RT
Standing tackle, shoulder challenge Circle B
Slide tackle Square X
Contain Hold X Hold A
Teammate Contain Hold R1 Hold RB
Change player L1 or flick the right stick LB or flick the right stick

On PC, FC 27 replaced the old keyboard layouts with new WASD and Arrows schemes; EA Help lists them under its mouse and keyboard controls article, and the full binding list is in the in-game controls menu.

How to Defend a Dribbler, Step by Step

  1. Switch early. As the pass is played, change to the defender closest to the receiver’s path, not the one nearest the ball after it arrives. AI teammates will not step in for you.
  2. Jockey to close the angle. Hold jockey and stay goal-side, showing the attacker toward the touchline or toward a covering teammate. FC 27’s faster manual jockey lets you keep up with quick turns.
  3. Use Teammate Contain to double up, not to win the ball. Holding it sends a second player toward the ball carrier from a distance, which blocks the easy pass while you stay in front.
  4. Tackle on a heavy touch. Press standing tackle when the ball leaves the attacker’s feet, with your body between them and goal. The longer manual tackle range rewards you for being slightly early rather than late.
  5. Save the slide for the last resort. A missed slide takes your defender out of the play, and AI teammates will not cover with an automatic tackle.

Shoulder Challenges and Physical Play

Physical play dominated the FC 27 beta, and EA changed it before launch. Shoulder challenges are now most effective when you are side by side with the ball carrier, not chasing from behind. Mashing the challenge button in quick succession makes your defender stick an arm out and lose speed, so spamming it while chasing now helps the attacker escape. Strength still decides the duel, the Bruiser PlayStyle still helps, and EA slightly reduced the extra benefit of Bruiser+.

Watch for elite dribblers too. FC 27 adds off-balance dribbling, driven by Balance, Agility and Dribbling: the best dribblers can stumble through a bump and keep the ball, so a shoulder challenge on them is not a guaranteed win.

Tactics That Help Manual Defenders

  • Keep Team Press for the opposition half. It has no effect in your own third, and higher up it can pull defenders out of shape.
  • Drop your Defensive Depth if you get beaten in behind. EA made lower depth settings sit visibly deeper this year.
  • Read the through ball. Ground and lobbed through passes now strictly follow the passer’s aim with less assistance, which gives a manual defender a fair chance to read and cut them out.
  • Punish Player Lock. When an opponent player-locks away from the ball, their ball carrier keeps running in a straight line and no longer dodges defenders automatically. That is the moment to step in.

For full setups built around these settings, see our best tactics and formations guide. Defenders with high Interceptions also got more reach this year, a detail worth checking in our highest rated players list.

Defending in Career Mode and Kick-Off

Authentic gameplay uses its own tuning. EA’s Title Update 1.0.1 notes say Jockey and Sprint Jockey default slider values were moderately increased in Authentic gameplay only, and FC 27 adds 25 new Gameplay Sliders and 10 new CPU Sliders there. If CPU attackers feel too sharp in Career Mode, those sliders are the place to adjust. More guides are on our EA FC 27 hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did EA remove auto-tackling in FC 27? In Competitive gameplay, yes: AI teammates no longer tackle a nearby dribbler, though they can still win a loose ball or one run straight into them.

What is the best way to defend in FC 27? Switch to the right defender early, jockey to stay goal-side, and time a standing tackle yourself. EA made manual jockeying faster and tackle range longer to support this.

Does Team Press still work in FC 27? Only outside your defensive third. EA made it have no effect while the ball is in your own third.

Why does my defender stick his arm out and slow down? You pressed shoulder challenge repeatedly. EA made spamming the input slow your defender down; get side by side first, then challenge once.

Do these changes apply in Career Mode? No. The AI defending changes are for Competitive gameplay; Career Mode and Kick-Off use Authentic gameplay with its own sliders.
