Fable 2: How to Donate to the Temple of Light

The Fable II hero standing with hands on hips on a sunny village path lined with trees and an iron fence

To donate to the Temple of Light in Fable II, go to the temple in Oakfield after finishing the Hero of Strength part of the story, speak to the priest, Timothy Lightjoy, then interact with the donation font and pick an amount. Each donation earns Good and Pure points plus experience, and a large one made at the right hour unlocks a legendary weapon.

This guide covers when the donation option opens up, the step-by-step process with Xbox controls, which amounts give the best return, the noon trick for The Rising Sun, and the story choice that can close the temple for good. It covers Lionhead’s original 2008 Fable II, the same game you get today on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility, not the new Fable reboot (more on that below).

When you can start donating

The Temple of Light sits in Oakfield, the farming region you reach early in the main story. Per the community wiki, the option to donate becomes a side quest, “Donating to the Light”, once you have completed The Hero of Strength chapter, the part of the story in which Hammer joins you.

The temple’s fate is tied to a story choice in Oakfield, so timing matters:

  • If you complete Defender of the Light, the temple survives and even expands with new buildings after the main story’s time skip, and per the community wiki the donation quest never leaves your quest log.
  • If you side with the Temple of Shadows (the Oakfield Massacre quest), or complete neither quest before the time skip, the community wiki says the Temple of Light is abandoned, and you can no longer donate there.

If you want to keep donating for the whole game, finish Defender of the Light before you move the story forward.

How to donate, step by step

  1. Travel to Oakfield. The official manual says you can fast travel to any map location you have visited: press Start to open the Pause menu, select Quests/Maps, and choose the location.
  2. Go into the Temple of Light and speak with Timothy Lightjoy, the priest inside, by facing him and pressing A (the interact button).
  3. Interact with the donation font with A, then choose how much gold to give.
  4. Watch the reward. Your Good and Purity rise, and you receive experience.

The Fable II manual lists A as Interact on the Xbox controller, and the same buttons apply on Xbox One and Series X|S, since the game runs as a backward compatible Xbox 360 title. You can also stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC; our guide on connecting an Xbox controller to PC covers the controller side of that setup.

Which amounts give the best return

Per the community wiki, each donation has a fixed reward bracket:

Donation Good points Pure points
250 gold 10 10
1,000 gold 25 25
2,500 gold 50 50
5,000 gold or more 75 75

The reward caps at 75 points however much you give, so a 20,000 gold donation earns the same alignment as a 5,000 one. By the same numbers, several small donations beat one large one for morality: four 250 gold donations (1,000 gold total) give 40 points, while a single 1,000 gold donation gives 25. Every donation also grants general experience, and the wiki notes that bigger donations give more.

The Fable II manual explains why this matters: Good and Evil shape how villagers react to you, while “purity makes Heroes more attractive, while corruption renders them ugly.” Donating is one of the simplest ways to push both meters toward the light, and the wiki adds that it can also reverse some of the aging your Hero picks up during the story.

The noon donation and The Rising Sun

Donating has a hidden reward. Per the community wiki:

  1. Donate a cumulative total of 500 gold. Timothy Lightjoy will then tell you that you can become the next Harvest Benefactor.
  2. Donate 10,000 gold in a single donation during the temple’s holy hour, between 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm in-game.
  3. You receive The Rising Sun, a legendary cleaver whose augment deals extra damage to truly evil enemies such as banshees and shadows.

The in-game clock appears when you pause, per player guides, so check it before you donate. The manual notes that fast travel passes time (“the journey still takes hours or days”), and player guides describe sleeping in a bed as moving the clock forward too, so you can use either to line up the noon window. The Harvest Benefactor title you earn this way cannot be bought from a Town Crier, per the wiki.

If you have a lot of gold, you can also buy the temple itself after Defender of the Light. The wiki lists a base value of 100,000 gold and says owning it unlocks “The Chosen One” title.

Fable II, not the new Fable

Everything above applies to Fable II. The Temple of Light is a Fable II location, and the upcoming Fable reboot from Playground Games is a separate game with its own world; our Fable release date guide covers what is confirmed about it. If you want something newer on Xbox while you wait, our list of the best Xbox games of 2026 is a good place to start.

On today’s hardware, Fable II is sold on the Xbox Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, is marked Xbox One X Enhanced, and is listed as included with Game Pass, per the store page. It can also be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

How much should I donate to the Temple of Light? Per the community wiki, 5,000 gold is the most that counts for alignment (75 Good and 75 Pure), and small 250 gold donations give the best morality per coin.

How do I get The Rising Sun? Donate 500 gold in total to become Harvest Benefactor, then donate 10,000 gold at once between noon and 1:00 pm, per the community wiki.
