Final Fantasy Resonance: Whether Demo Saves Carry Over

Yes. Square Enix says your Final Fantasy Resonance demo save carries over to the full game, which launches on October 22, 2026. The free demo covers the opening through the end of Chapter 1, which Square Enix puts at roughly 3 to 5 hours, so anything you finish now is progress you keep at launch.

There is one catch that matters more than any other: the save stays on the platform you played it on, and on Nintendo hardware the Switch and Switch 2 versions are separate games. Below is exactly what Square Enix has said, what the demo includes, which platform rules apply, and whether demo players get any bonus for playing early.

What Square Enix Says About the Demo Save

The wording comes straight from the publisher, in two places. The demo’s store text on Steam, PlayStation and Xbox opens with: “Begin your journey with the free demo where your saved data carries over to the full game!” And Square Enix’s official news post for the demo, published on its Final Fantasy portal, says players can play “the game’s opening through the first chapter (approximately 3-5 hours of gameplay), with save data carrying over to the full game when it launches on Oct. 22, 2026.”

The official Final Fantasy Resonance site repeats it in its demo panel: “Carry over your saved data to the full game.” There is no condition attached to that promise in any of Square Enix’s English-language material, beyond the platform rules covered below.

What the Demo Includes

The demo went live on September 3, 2026, the same day Square Enix showed a new trailer during Sony’s State of Play. Here is what it contains, per Square Enix:

  • The story from the opening to the end of Chapter 1. You play as Rain, commander of the Kingdom of Grandshelt’s airship squadron, alongside his deputy Lasswell, starting with the investigation of the Earth Shrine.
  • Chapter 1 exactly as it plays in the full game. The store text says you “can freely explore the entire first chapter exactly as it appears in the full version.”
  • Level restrictions. The same text adds that “some level restrictions apply.” Square Enix has not published the cap, so we are not going to guess at a number.
  • The core battle system. Turn-based combat built around exploiting weaknesses to stagger enemies, plus Visions, the echoes of past Final Fantasy heroes who fight alongside your party.
  • A 3 to 5 hour run time, by Square Enix’s own estimate.

The demo is free on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam, and Xbox on PC.

The Platform Rules for Your Save

Square Enix has not published a cross-platform transfer feature, so treat the demo save as tied to the platform and account you played on. The details by platform:

Platform What carries over What to watch
PS5 Demo save to the PS5 full game There is no PS4 version of either
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC Demo save to the Xbox full game The Xbox Store lists Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox cloud saves for the demo
Steam Demo save to the Steam full game Steam Cloud is listed for both the demo and the full game
Nintendo Switch 2 Switch 2 demo save to the Switch 2 full game Separate demo and separate game from the Switch version
Nintendo Switch Switch demo save to the Switch full game Cannot move to the Switch 2 version later

The Nintendo row is the one that trips people up. Nintendo’s US store pages for the full game carry Square Enix’s notice that “it is not possible to carry save data from the Nintendo Switch version over to the Nintendo Switch 2 version,” and the same in reverse. There are also separate demos for each system. If you own a Switch 2, download the Switch 2 demo, not the original Switch one, or your Chapter 1 progress will be stranded on the wrong version.

The Xbox and Steam notes come from the store listings themselves. Square Enix has not said in so many words that a demo save made on an Xbox console will load in the Xbox on PC version, so if you plan to switch devices at launch, play the demo on the device you intend to use.

Do Demo Players Get a Bonus?

No separate reward for playing the demo has been announced as of October 13, 2026. The carried-over progress is the benefit. The in-game bonuses Square Enix has announced are tied to buying the game, not to the demo:

  • Pre-order Bonus: Magitek Airship and Squire Starter Pack, for anyone who pre-orders before release.
  • Early Purchase Bonus: Squire Kickstart Pack, for buying within the first couple of weeks after launch.
  • Magitek and Grimoire Deluxe Pack, included with the Digital Deluxe Edition.

All three are collected from the postbox in front of the inn in the Town of Mitra after you progress past a certain point in the story, so a carried-over demo save does not make you miss them.

Square Enix also revealed during the demo’s launch that Sephiroth appears in Final Fantasy Resonance, and that players can find and challenge him “in hopes of winning and unlocking a special reward.” Square Enix has not tied that fight to the demo, so do not expect to find it in Chapter 1.

How to Make Sure Your Save Transfers

Square Enix has not published step-by-step transfer instructions, so these are the habits that keep a demo save safe until launch:

  1. Play on the platform you will buy for. On Nintendo hardware, match the demo to the version (Switch or Switch 2) you plan to buy.
  2. Use the same account for the demo and the full game: the same PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam or Nintendo Account.
  3. Save at the end of Chapter 1. Players who have finished the demo report that it prompts you to save when the chapter ends. That end-of-chapter save is the one to keep.
  4. Do not delete the demo’s save data. You can uninstall the demo itself to free space if you need to, but leave its saved data alone until the full game has picked it up.
  5. Update the full game at launch before loading the save, in case a day-one patch is required.

Is the Demo Worth Playing Before Launch?

For anyone already planning to buy, yes: it is the real Chapter 1, not a cut-down slice, so the 3 to 5 hours you spend now are hours you skip on October 22. It is also the cheapest way to settle the platform question before you pay, since performance and handheld comfort differ between versions.

Final Fantasy Resonance is one of the biggest games coming out in October, and our upcoming releases calendar has the rest of the month’s launches. It is not the only October demo with carryover, either: the Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse demo and the Metaphor: ReFantazio demo on Switch 2 work the same way.
