The main way to earn V-Bucks in Fortnite without spending money is to level up the seasonal passes: Epic says both the Free Pass and the Battle Pass pay out V-Bucks as you progress, and a completed Battle Pass returns 800 V-Bucks, enough to buy the next one. Save the World Founders earn more from missions, and a few official side routes add small amounts.
Below we cover each legitimate route, how to turn one Battle Pass into a pass that pays for itself every season, and the “free V-Bucks” offers that Epic warns are scams.
Which Version This Covers
This guide is current for Chapter 7 Season 4, Fortnite Override, on the v42.20 update, as of September 28, 2026. Pass rewards change every season, and Epic changed the V-Bucks economy on March 19, 2026. Per Epic’s announcement of that V-Bucks price increase, completing the Battle Pass earns 800 V-Bucks, and the pass’s Bonus Rewards no longer include any V-Bucks. The Override pass itself costs 800 V-Bucks, and Epic’s help center says Fortnite Crew now grants 800 V-Bucks a month.
The Override Battle Pass ends November 1, 2026, Eastern Time, per Epic’s Battle Pass page; our guide to when the current season ends explains why some calendars say October 31. Everything below applies on every platform.
Route 1: The Free Pass
Every player gets the Free Pass each season at no cost. In Epic’s help article on getting V-Bucks, it says both the Free Pass and the Battle Pass let you earn V-Bucks as you level up. Epic does not list the free amount there. The community wiki puts it at 300 V-Bucks per season, if you reach the required level.
At that rate, a patient free player saves enough for an 800 V-Buck Battle Pass in three seasons, and from then on the pass can fund itself (see Route 2).
Leveling is the whole game here, and it is easier than it used to be. Epic’s help center says Battle Pass XP comes from any Fortnite experience: Battle Royale, creator-made Creative maps, LEGO Fortnite and Fortnite Festival all count. Route 2: Make the Battle Pass Pay for Itself
This is the loop that keeps free-to-play players in V-Bucks. Once you own a Battle Pass, finishing it returns 800 V-Bucks, which Epic says is enough to get the next one. Complete every pass and you never pay again.
To keep the loop going:
- Finish before the season ends. Epic’s help center says passes for ended seasons cannot be bought, and you stop earning pass XP once the season is over.
- Claim as you go, but do not panic. Epic says unlocked rewards you forgot to claim are auto-claimed at the end of the season.
- Keep 800 V-Bucks in reserve. Spending your pass refund in the Item Shop breaks the loop.
- Get the first pass as a gift. A friend can send you the Battle Pass through Epic’s gifting system, which breaks the chicken-and-egg problem. Our guide to gifting skins and the Battle Pass covers the rules.
Route 3: Save the World, for Founders Only
Save the World still pays V-Bucks, but only to Founders. Epic’s help center defines Founders as players who purchased Save the World before June 29, 2020, and says they earn V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense missions and challenges.
Everyone else earns X-Ray Tickets instead. Those only buy X-Ray Llamas inside Save the World and cannot be spent in Battle Royale. If you are not a Founder, this route is closed.
Other Official Routes
- Microsoft Rewards. Microsoft’s own support pages say Rewards points can be redeemed for rewards “from Amazon to Xbox,” and notes that the selection varies by country and over time. Xbox gift card balance can then buy V-Bucks in the Microsoft Store.
- V-Bucks cards as gifts. Epic’s help center says V-Bucks Cards are sold at authorized retailers and online, and redeemed through Epic’s official redeem page. A card someone gives you costs you nothing.
- Island development, for adults. Members of the Fortnite Developer Program earn engagement payouts from their islands, and Epic says they can take those payouts in V-Bucks through the Developer Wallet without submitting tax details. Enrollment requires being 18 or older and a qualifying purchase history, so it is not free for everyone.

- Free cosmetics, not V-Bucks. Epic’s help center says securing your account with two-factor authentication unlocks a free item; our guide to enabling 2FA walks through it.
Free V-Bucks Scams to Avoid
Search for free V-Bucks and you will find generators, “code” sites and islands that promise payouts. None of them work:
- Epic’s own warning. An in-game notice from Epic reads: “Avoid scam sites offering free V-Bucks. Epic will never ask for your password.” Its help center adds that real offers only appear in the Epic Games Store or on Epic’s official websites and social channels.
- No island can pay V-Bucks. Epic’s rules for Fortnite islands ban creators from offering V-Bucks inside an island and from mentioning V-Bucks or rewards in an island’s promotion. A “free V-Bucks map” is breaking those rules or lying.
- Support will not grant them. Epic says Player Support cannot give out items for free, so anyone telling you to file a ticket for free V-Bucks is misleading you.
